John Garner 1978 Ford F-350

Diesel Power: What changes are you making to the truck since you entered?
John Garner: “When I entered I was in the process of installing a larger intercooler. Because my truck never came with a Diesel or an intercooler, I knew getting it to fit was going to be challenging. However, I am on day 3 and still need to solve a few things. Other than the intercooler, just safety changes like driveline safety loops and a suspension limiter for the air bag setup.

One difficult challenge I had in getting ready is my truck was in Seattle and I lived in Minnesota. I was only able to take a short amount of time off to get it ready. Only a few days to go and I am 90 percent of the way done.”

DP: What is your strategy going to be for each event?
JG: “Dyno: I can control my transmission with my laptop and force it to go directly into 4th gear and lockup so I can spool quickly to get a bigger torque number. Otherwise, the one that concerns me the most is the sled pull. I have never done a sled pull and I know it is easy to break stuff in that event.”

DP: What tires do you plan to use?
JG: “Nitto 37x13.50 Terra Grapplers on 22-inch wheels, if they will fit. They are the same rated size as the tires I have on the truck now, but are really about an inch taller and wider. Since I have a dualie, spacing for the back tires could make it so I have to run my old Kumho mud terrains.”

DP: What spare parts are you bringing?
JG: “Not much. Most of my performance parts came from ATS so hopefully they will have anything I need.”

DP: Who are your crewmembers?
JG: “Just my wife and my two pugs.”

DP: Any other thoughts?
JG: “Can’t wait to get there to meet everyone!”
