Day 2 of the 2014 Diesel Power Challenge kicked off with the Trailer Tow Obstacle Course. This is the one event that really puts the driver under pressure, as the spotlight shifts from the truck’s go-fast prowess to the driver’s ability to navigate a 10,000-pound tractor-carrying trailer both forward and backwards through sections of a coned-off course. Some competitors are very skilled in maneuvering trailers, while others may have never pulled a trailer before. Some can pull it together for the two minutes that count, while others crumble under the stress. With all the cameras poised and the stopwatch running, panic and frustration can easily set in the instant the first downed cone hits the pavement.

We were down to eight competitors for this event, as Chomos was still battling his ’11 Chevy and Dan Manary was forced to call it quits after over-juicing his ’12 Ford F-350 the night before. This year’s group displayed some very impressive times with notable accuracy, as only two competitors received cone penalties. Troy Sankey in his ’06 Chevy 2500 put down the best time of the day, and Lavon Miller in his ’04 Dodge barely edged out Shilo Ellingford in his ’06 Chevy to round out the top three. Last year’s event winner, Beech, put down cones instead of a good time, showing that absolutely anything can happen at DPC. Overall, it was a great start to Day 2 of competition.

Description The trailer-tow obstacle course is an event designed to assess each driver’s skill. This timed test will involve hooking your truck up to a trailer, driving through a coned-off course, and then backing the trailer into a designated parking spot. There will be a time penalty of 10 seconds for each cone hit. The driver who completes the course in the least amount of overall time will be the winner of this event.

Here was the randomly-selected running order and total time (including cone penalties) for each competitor:
