Diesel Power Challenge 2015 Competitor Jeremy Stoneburners 2001 Dodge Ram 2500

A 5.9L Cummins That Gets Used

“Give a VP44 a chance” was the plea left at the end of two pages of handwritten specifications submitted by Jeremy “Buck” Stoneburner as part of his entry for Diesel Power Challenge 2015. His ’01 Ram 2500 was the only non-common-rail Dodge selected for this year’s competition, but this is not all that’s unique about Buck’s rig.

“Make sure you get a picture of that,” was his instruction as we started inspecting a noticeable rust hole in the passenger door. We quickly learned that Buck is proud that his truck is far from being a polished trailer queen. You can easily tell that it’s a real-world diesel that’s seen plenty of weather and work during its decade and a half on the road and the racetrack.

Under the hood is a 5.9L Cummins engine that’s fueled by the famous Industrial Injection Hot Rod VP44 injection pump, with air forced into it by a compound setup using a BorgWarner S362 over a S480 turbocharger. Compressed air is routed through a D&J air-to-air intercooler and into a custom intake manifold, and there’s a two-stage nitrous-oxide setup for added power. The exhaust is expelled through a Stainless Diesel manifold and a 5-inch Diamond Eye exhaust system, and the Cummins’ power is sent to the pavement through stock axles with 3.55:1 gears.
It’s a fairly simple setup, but that’s exactly what makes “Ol’ Smoky” so cool.
