The large 2015 Diesel Power Challenge entry form packet sent in by Jerry Adkins included the required tech sheet, five glossy photos, a dyno chart reading 1,063.2 hp, and a timeslip showing an 11.6836-second quarter-mile run at 119.99 mph. It wasn’t a hard choice to include him as part of the Team Ram section in the voting issue. Jerry told us he had lots of help from his family in gathering up Diesel Power magazines to send in as many ballots as possible, and his custom license plate has a message for anyone who has a problem with his commitment to compete: HI HATRZ.

After the votes were counted and Jerry was chosen to run with the Rams of DPC 2015, we asked him to update the information on his truck and tell us the story of his project. We got a lot more information than we expected, so here’s what Jerry had to say in his own words (edited for space):
“My story: I've always had an itch for diesel trucks. I'm a diabetic, and I spent a lot of my teenage years in the hospital. Getting out and messing with these trucks and going to events has made life a lot more enjoyable, and I've gained so many friends from the sport.

“Last year, I started building this truck after being sick and selling my 650hp six-speed truck because I wanted a nicely built automatic truck to race—so the build started. We were almost finished and started to do heat cycles, and the engine threw a rod at just 38,000 miles. I started over with help from Lavon Miller and Firepunk Diesel and decided to build a 1,000-plus-horsepower daily driver.
“As we came to a finish, I got sick again and went into a coma. After I woke up and got healthy, I picked the truck up a week later and drove to my first event at Thoroughbred Diesel. There, I was the first person to break 1,000 hp on the dyno and got Second Place.
“A week after that, I won my first event at XTP. When winter set in, I started my goal of being chosen for DPC 2015—and now we’re here. I just want to do the best I can and make my friends and family proud. This sport is a great stress reliever from life and work—and it really makes me want to be healthy for every single event so I can keep pushing toward goals and meeting new friends.”
