DPC 2017/Day 4: Trailer-Tow Obstacle Course
Diesel Power Challenge 2017: Day 4
Day 4 of the Diesel Power Challenge 2017 Presented by XDP, was a tough one as it had our competitors weave their way through a very complex set of cones for our Obstacle Course. Loaded down with the same 10,000-pound trailer and Bobcat combo, these trucks and their drivers were pushed to their limit.
Designed by the editor of Truck Trend, Jason Gonderman, and local racing and towing expert Brandon Wright (who demonstrated the course to our drivers in a ’17 Ford F-350 Super Duty), the course was held in the upper parking lot of Bandimere Speedway in Morrison, Colorado.
Offering a series of twists and turns for the drivers to negotiate with their heavy loads, with a strategically placed Stop Box where drivers had to halt their vehicle in a certain spot, a set of cones that had competitors backing up in a straight liner into an increasingly narrowing channel, and the finish line which had our drivers backing up their trailers into the starting gate.
Each and every one of these skilled competitors had their hands full with this technical and challenging course. Many drivers made it through with nary a point taken off for cone violations, but some of the markers did not fare so well as they were sent flying with wide turns and sudden stops. On this sunny afternoon 5,000 feet above sea level in Morrison, the crews cheered after each run and this crop of competitors made it through our obstacle course with flying colors, showing off why they were picked for DPC 2017.
Like it does at this time of year in Colorado, the afternoon was met with a little rain. And with that rain, it brought a little carnage. ATS Diesel Performance once again opened its doors after hours so Levi Krech could do some maintenance and strengthening on his ’06 Dodge Ram 2500, Tim Jahn and his ’04 Ford F-250 was replaced a damaged transmission with a spare he had and installed a new torque converter, and Patrick Whitcomb in his ’08 Ford F-350 had to use a lift to pull the cab and repair a cracked up-pipe and checked the turbo plumbing.
