Big Trucks, Small SUVs In the the Big Apple

It's not without a certain amount of irony that one of the biggest global auto shows, and certainly one of the most significant to the U.S. market, is held in New York City, one of nation's metropolitan areas with the lowest rates of private vehicle ownership. Nonetheless, the 2014 New York Auto Show remains a major international destination on the auto show circuit.
This year, several important truck debuts will be taking place in the Big Apple, among them the 2015 Ram 2500 Power Wagon -- the third generation of the iconic fullsize off-roader. This will also be the general public's first look at the 2015 Ford Transit Skyliner concept revealed earlier this week in Southern California. Also present will be the HD version of the Chevrolet Silverado High Country, the bowtie brand's equivalent to the wildly successful Denali trim offered by GMC.
The new Jeep Renegade subcompact SUV will be on display as well, which, along with the new KL Cherokee, promises to make the Jeep brand's appeal truly global. Although it did not have its "official" debut in New York, the new Lexus NX crossover is sure to be the talk of the town, giving Toyota's premium brand an entry in the important and growing premium compact crossover market. After the debut of the High Country trim level for the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, we knew it was only a matter of time before the premium trim migrated to other models in the Chevrolet truck lineup. And today we have confirmation of that strategy with the introduction of the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado HD High Country.
As with the half-ton model, the High Country HD brings both cosmetic and content upgrades over a similarly-equipped LTZ model, starting with body-colored front and rear bumpers, included tube steps, High Country badges on the door, and door sill plates.

Well-known California-based customizer Galpin Auto Sports got its hands on an early pilot-production 2015 Ford Transit and gave it the custom touch.

2014 Ram 2500 Power Wagon
The 2014 Ram Power Wagon is powered by the new 6.4L Hemi 16-valve V-8, boasting 410 hp at 5,600 rpm and 429 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm and calibrated for off-road maneuverability and finesse. The transmission is a 66RFE six-speed automatic, which connects to a part-time, manual-engagement BorgWarner BW 44-47 transfer case. The axles are built by America Axle Manufacturing: a 9.25-inch in the front and 11.5-inch in the rear, both of which include electronic locking differentials. Power is delivered via a 4.10:1 ring and pinion ratio. The axle shafts measure 38 mm in the rear and 35 mm in the front. New for 2014 is the segment-exclusive front axle disconnect system across the Ram Heavy Duty truck line.

at to heart when developing the second-generation QX full-size SUV. The first generation was based on the Nissan Armada, and aside from a large chrome grille and a few detail changes inside and out, offered little to meaningfully distinguish it from its more mainstream cousin. For its second-generation attempt, Infiniti instead utilized the next generation of its global Patrol full-size platform, and with this change, got a considerably more refined, sophisticated and stylish addition to its U.S. lineup. With the 2015 Infiniti QX80, the already excellent and critically-acclaimed second-generation QX receives further refinement and styling updates. The 5.6-liter direct-injected V-8 producing 400 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque and the seven-speed automatic transmission carry over from the 2014 model.

The trend of globalization is nothing new in the auto industry, having been the modus operandi over the better part of the past decade, especially on the part of the Detroit Three, which have been trying to rationalize their global models onto common platforms. One of the major exceptions to this has been Chrysler's Jeep brand, which made its mark with proudly American designed-and-styled vehicles that happened to be sold overseas. The 2014 Cherokee is the first of the new "global" Jeeps drawing upon the resources of the newly official Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. The 2015 Jeep Renegade (not the Jeepster) is the second, and is even more worldly in its appeal than the stylishly cosmopolitan Cherokee.

The Subaru Outback has always been beloved by outdoor enthusiasts, but the newly designed 2015 Outback will urge them to wander farther, thanks to copious improvements. The Outback, which Subaru has always called the world's first sport/utility wagon, has been completely made over with a new look, improved cargo room, enhanced driving dynamics, and better fuel efficiency.

Although the Outback keeps the same 2.5-liter H-4, Subaru says it's been enhanced for lighter weight, improved efficiency, and quieter operation. It produces slightly more power (from 173 horses to 175), while peak torque remains at 174 lb-ft. The 3.6-liter H-6 engine that makes 256 hp also carries over, dispelling the rumor that it would be dropped in favor of the 250-hp 2.0-liter H-4 turbo from the 2014 Forester. Both engines will be paired with a CVT. (Six-cylinder models get a high-torque version, meaning the five-speed automatic and six-speed manual transmissions are out of the picture.) Four-cylinder models also come equipped with a new active grille shutter system that helps improve efficiency.

At first glance, the Land Rover Discovery Vision Concept doesn't look that outlandish. Sure, it has the usual concept car features such as missing door handles and impossibly slim side mirrors. It also has laser headlights and a detachable remote control. How many of these features actually make it to the production model remains to be seen, but we like the direction Land Rover is going.

The Nissan Murano was one of the originators of the original crossover segment, debuting as a 2003 model. Although today we take for granted that the majority of SUVs sold now are unibody, front-drive models that share a lot of their hardware with cars, at the time, many SUVs were still truck-based, or even if they were car-based, had conspicuously boxy, truckish styling. The Murano bucked that trend with a radically sleek, rounded style that set the stage for many other crossover models to come. The third-generation 2015 Nissan Murano builds on the model's historical strengths, with an accentuated emphasis on style, convenience and technology.

BMW X5 eDrive Concept
BMW is careful to call the vehicle a "concept," but almost everything except the powertrainon the X5 eDrive is standard-issue X5. In addition to being the first plug-in hybrid X5, it is also the first four-cylinder X5, powered by BMW's 2.0-liter I-4 and supplemented by a 95-hp electric motor. This is a major departure from BMW's previous SUV hybrid effort, a stomping 485-hp twin-turbocharged V-8 hybrid in the form of the X6 ActiveHybrid. Unsurprisingly, very few were sold, with few buyers seeing the need for an ultra-powerful hybridized $90,000 limited-utility fastback SUV.

The latest trend among the premium brands is to try to slice out ever narrower niches off a common platform, creating vehicles that have a simultaneously broad and specific appeal. The new 2015 BMW X4 is a case in point. The new smaller "sport activity coupe" is in addition to the BMW X1 crossover hatch, the bread-and-butter X3 on which it is based, the 3 Series wagon, and don't forget the 3 Series Grand Touring, which basically looks like a less-chunky, more carlike version of the BMW X4. So you basically have four variations on the same theme. Where does that leave the X4? Let us examine.

The Mini Countryman gets a mild refresh for 2015 but doesn't yet make the transition to the new platform underpinning the 2014 Mini Cooper two-door model. That means it's still powered by a 1.6L I-4 engine, making a maximum of 208 hp and 192 lb-ft of torque (207 lb-ft on overboost) in the John Cooper Works model. Most of the changes to the '15 model are cosmetic, with three new exterior colors: Jungle Green metallic, Midnight Grey metallic, and Starlight Blue metallic.
The 2015 MINI Countryman models get revised grilles with a red radiator rib with a logo badge on JCW models. Optional is a new Piano Black exterior finish option, which applies a high-gloss black finish to selected exterior trim areas, including the accent piece between the A-pillar and wheelwell. Other changes include lighter-weight alloy wheels, LED foglights, and driving lights. The speedometer and tachometer get an anthracite finish on all Countryman models, following the style of the JCW model. Expect the Mini Countryman to move to the new platform within the next two years.

2015 Chevrolet Trax
Chevrolet will get its own version of the Gamma-II-based Encore in the U.S. market with the 2015 Chevrolet Trax. For some unknown reason, other than letting the Buick Encore get its 15 minutes of fame, the Trax was introduced to the Canadian and global markets in 2013. So while not completely new to the world, the Trax is new to the U.S. market. Mechanically, if you're familiar with the Encore, you'll be familiar with the Trax. The powertrain is the familiar 1.4-liter 138-hp turbo I-4 mated exclusively to the Hydra-matic 6T40 six-speed automatic. Customers have a choice of front- or all-wheel drive.

Honda hasn’t released powertrain details, though expect the HR-V to be powered by the 2015 Honda Fit’s 130-hp, 1.5-liter inline-four engine. A CVT will most likely be used, though it’ll be interesting to see if Honda offers the HR-V with a six-speed manual. The fourth-generation Fit is slightly larger, with a wheelbase that has stretched 1.2 inches, providing more passenger and cargo room. The chassis is not only stiffer thanks to a new body-on-skeleton construction, but it’s also lighter thanks to a number of revised components such as its hollow front anti-roll bar.
