Trail Towing Terror

Flat-towing a 3,500-pound Wrangler behind a monstrously powerful ¾-ton pickup isn’t anything to brag about, really. But our 2015 Ram Power Wagon comes from the factory fully equipped to tackle some serious terrain. With 4.10 axle gears, front and rear electronic lockers, swaybar disconnects, a humongous Warn winch, and a trial-tuned suspension ticking just a few of the “awesome” boxes the Power Wagon package gets you, most people we talk with at the fuel pump wanna know one thing – “can you actually tow with those things?”

Well, other than the frequent fuel pump visits (we averaged 11.19 mpg at a steady 65 mph from San Diego to Moab), the answer is a most definite “yes”. The 6.4L Hemi hammers out 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque. And when we say “hammers” out, it’s a very apt description given the way this engine lays down the power. Pull out to pass a slow-moving truck or head up an on-ramp and you quickly realize that this big Hemi can get the job done without needing to rev itself apart at the valve guides. And when your tow rig combo is accelerating up a grade with the tach at less than 3,000 rpm and the engine is churning out all that gooey torque, it really does seem like you can almost feel each individual explosion happening in the cylinders.

Stability, braking, and steering? Well, when you flat-tow, there’s no tonque weight to squat the rear suspension, so we can’t really comment on that. But the brakes are absolutely ferocious now that the pads have fully bedded into the rotors. And when coming down steep grades or pulling off the freeway on off-ramps, the Ram doesn’t get pushed around in the slightest. But then again, we’re only towing a 3,500-pound YJ. We’ll get a better test of the chassis dynamics while towing once we get our hands on a heavier trailer…and save up for some more fuel.
