2012 Geneva: Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Convertible Concept
Land Rover has had a hit with its compact Range Rover Evoque. Now, it looks like the brand will definitely be trying to capitalize on it with a new variant -- the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Convertible Concept.
The drop-top model starts with the three-door Evoque coupe and chops the roof off, replacing it with a folding fabric top. When folded, the soft top resides beneath a tonneau cover that blends perfectly with the Evoque's rising beltline. Few changes were needed to increase torsional rigidity and Autocar says that the weight gain from coupe to convertible was minimal -- roughly 165 lbs, making the Evoque Convertible Concept easy to bring into reality. Even the Evoque's luxurious, four-seat interior carries over to the convertible essentially untouched.
When the Range Rover Evoque Convertible Concept graces the Geneva stage, it will be dressed in unique Causeway Grey paint and 21-inch Titan silver alloy wheels; the interior is swathed in Lunar leather complemented by ivory stitching.
Despite technically being a concept car, Autocar reports that the decision to put the Evoque Convertible into production could come as soon as a month after the car's reveal, assuming that there is positive reaction to it in Geneva. That said, the Evoque Convertible would reportedly need an additional two years of engineering development before it could go into production at the company's plant in Birmingham, England.
The addition of a convertible to the Evoque range would fit right in line with Land Rover's plans to further expand both the Range Rover portfolio and the Evoque model line. There have already been rumors of a long-wheelbase Evoque, and Land Rover has long waiting lists worldwide for the current three- and five-door Evoques. The Evoque Convertible could command a sizable premium over the already up-market Evoque -- Autocar estimates it could see at least a 10 to 15 percent price hike compared to the Evoque Coupe, which starts at $52,895 (including destination).
