This year's New York auto show provides a mix of world debuts and our chance to see some very cool vehicles in North America for the first time. The Porsche Cayenne hybrid and Volkswagen Touareg SUVs, Countryman mini-crossover, Mercedes-Benz R-Class, and Nissan Juke make their North American debuts. One of the most exciting introductions, though, promises to be the Infiniti QX56, rumored to be based on the legendary Nissan Patrol, a hard-core SUV that has been around for decades but has never come to the U.S.

Mitsubishi Outlander Sport
Known as the 2011 Mitsubishi ASX in Europe and hot off its world debut at the 2010 Geneva motor show
, the U.S. Spec Mitsubishi Outlander Sport will make its first North American appearance at the 2010 New York Auto Show.
U.S. spec cars will be powered by a 2.0 liter, four-cylinder MIVEC gas engine and will reportedly be available with either five-speed manual or CVT options. But no power or emissions figures are available yet. European-spec cars will get a choice of either a 1.6-liter gas engine with a five-speed manual transmission (targeting 139g/km of CO2) or a totally new 1.8-liter turbodiesel mated to a six-speed manual gearbox with Auto-Stop-and-Go idle-stop (targeting 145g/km of CO2). U.S. spec cars can expect similar readings. Two- and AWD options will be offered as well. Expect power and torque figures to be revealed closer to the mid-year launch, although we are told that all engines clear Euro 4 and Tier 2 Bin 5 emissions regulations.
Inside, Mitsubishi has lifted trim levels with high-quality plastics, and added a powered leather seat option, a Rockford Fosgate audio system, and a panorama glass roof. But whether the roof will meet international roll-over crash standards is still being determined. It boasts both telescopic and tilt steering functions, and while the car's seats are firm and comfortable, rear seat headroom caters to those under six feet tall. And it gets no less than seven cupholders -- five for front seat passengers. Engineers are especially proud of the Outlander Sport's newly fitted 'super-wide' HID headlight coverage, which doubles the area of road lit on both sides by the lights.
Based on a Mitsubishi engineer's comments, the U.S.-spec version with the 2.0-liter and five-speed manual combination will be the one to go for, and will deliver more driving enjoyment than the CVT-equipped model we drove in Japan. While pricing is still to be announced, one source suggested that the Outlander Sport will undercut all rivals while offering an almost identical driving experience and class-leading ride comfort levels. Mitsubishi has clearly done a lot of work developing the new Outlander Sport. It remains to be seen if it can make a dent in the fiercely competitive small crossover segment.

2011 Infiniti QX56
The 2011 QX56 is essentially a revised 2010 Nissan Patrol wearing Infiniti badges and restyled front and rear fascias. The face and butt aren't pretty, but then again, the QX never was in the first place. It also gets the contemporary Nissan/Infiniti "helmet" with blacked-out A-pillars as seen on the GT-R.
Behind the mask is the Patrol's 5.6-liter V-8, which is good for 400 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque. A seven-speed automatic doles the power to the electronically controlled four-wheel drive system. It's a sure bet the Patrol's hydraulic body control system is also carried over into its more luxurious cousin.

The 2011 Kia Sportage first wowed us with its new baby-Sorento styling last month at its international debut in Geneva, but now that it's turned up in New York for its U.S. debut, we've learned a few more facts about the new model.
2011 Kia Sportage Front Three Quarter
As you may already know, the new Sportage is even more pavement-biased than the outgoing model. Altogether, the new unibody is longer, wider and lower than the old model. What's more, even its all-wheel-drive system is heavily biased towards the front wheels, transferring only "a percentage" of the power on tap to the rear wheels to combat slippery surfaces. In the hairiest of situations, drivers can opt to lock the center differential and send 50 percent of the power to the rear wheels, though only to 25 mph. 2011 Kia Sorento SX
Not content with just three trim levels for its 2011 Sorento, Kia has unveiled a new topline SX model for its bestselling vehicle. The SX slots in above the Base, LX, and EX trims with a plethora of unique refinements and features.
The most obvious revisions are made to the exterior. The Sorento SX differentiates itself with five-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels, a new front grille, front and rear skidplates, and special front and rear fascias. The new front bumper cover is especially discernible, featuring larger foglight housings, new foglights, and a sportier-looking trapezoidal cutout with slightly larger air inlets. The SX bumpers abandon matte-black trimmings for a more premium, fully color-keyed look.
Chrome has been generously spread throughout the Sorento SX. The exhaust outlets, LED taillights, and roof rails gain a heaping helping while the new wheels are finished with chrome-like hyper silver paint.
Inside, the SX is equipped with leather seating, heated front seats, a unique metallic gauge cluster with stitched meter housing, and a 10-speaker Infinity Audio surround sound system. Other additions include accent interior illumination, stainless-steel pedals, an electrochromatic mirror with Homelink, and a voice-activated navigation system with rearview camera.
If these changes aren’t enough to garner consideration, the range-topping Sorento will also be equipped with special Dual Flow Damper shock absorbers and given a half-inch suspension lowering. The DFD shocks are specially tuned for the fully independent suspension and help maintain responsive handling while softening the impacts from imperfect roads.
Powering the SX model is the 3.5-liter V-6 with 276 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque. The engine is mated to the six-speed automatic transmission and can be ordered with front- or all-wheel drive.
A release date and pricing has not been released for the Sorento SX but the loaded EX V-6 with front-wheel drive is available from $28,190. The all-wheel-driven EX V-6 is priced from $29,890.
The 2011 Sorento went on sale in January and comfortably leads all Kia vehicle sales this year. Through February, Kia has sold 8207 Sorento CUVs, not including 159 from other model years. The closest in-brand competitor is the Forte at 4333 units.
All prices include a $795 destination and handling charge.
2011 Mercedes-Benz R-Class
Benz Gives its Crossover a Nosejob
Ever since its debut as a 2005 model year vehicle, the Mercedes R-Class has been one of Stuttgart's most controversial -- and questionably styled -- vehicles. Now with the 2011 R-Class, Mercedes is looking to change perceptions and jumpstart sales of the updated crossover, which is bowing at the 2010 New York show.
The 2011 R-Class range has been treated to a substantial facelift. Every inch of sheet metal forward of the A-pillars -- including the hood, fenders, grille, and bumper -- is completely new.

Using the recently updated GL-Class SUV as inspiration, designers abandoned the narrow nose of the original R in favor of a long, broad hood, which flows into a wide grille opening. Ovoid headlamps are abandoned in favor of rectangular lenses that flow into the curved fenders. LED running lamps -- one staple of the revamped GL -- lurk in the lower bumper openings in lieu of fog lamps. 17-inch, five-spoke aluminum wheels are standard, although a new sport appearance package adds AMG-designed 19-inch rims, along with smoked tail light lenses.
Interior revisions, however, are slightly less extensive. For the most part, the R-Class's cabin is left untouched, although it is now available with either a beige-on-brown or gray-on-black two-tone scheme. Six-passenger seating remains standard, although a 7-passenger arrangement, which replaces the second row of buckets with a split bench seat, is optional.

For North America, the R-Class remains a two-model lineup. The 2011 R350 continues to utilize Mercedes-Benz's 268-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6. Diesel fans will likely want to spring for the R350 Bluetec, which uses the same 215 horsepower, 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 as the ML350 Bluetec and GL350 Bluetec. Both the gasoline and diesel engines are mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission, which channels power to all four wheels via Mercedes' 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system.
Option packages and pricing for both 2011 R-class models are expected to remain similar to the 2010 model. Expect the revised 2011 R to roll off Mercedes-Benz's assembly line in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in the next few months.

2012 Mini Countryman
Might not be a hard-core off-roader, but it sure looks like fun

Fresh off its world debut at the 2010 Geneva motor show
, the 2012 Mini Countryman will make its first North American appearance at the 2010 New York Auto Show.
With all of the hints and rumors surrounding the Countryman over the
past couple of years (!!!), it was almost a relief to finally see the
production version of the crossover. Mini's press conferences are fun
and energetic, and in New York, served as a great pick-me-up on the
second day. Great music (says this biased early U2 fan), entertaining
shots on the video screen, including people stacking pineapples in the
cargo area of a Countryman, an older couple dancing, and a closeup on a
cow's mouth as it was chewing. It all made sense at the time, as all of
the shots were chosen to convey a sense of excitement, fun, humor, and
adventure, and interspersed with these images were slow-motion action
shots of the Countryman in the dirt.
The Countryman is going on sale in the USA in February 2011, and
provides seating for four or five. One of the really cool features in
the cabin is the center rail, which has mood lighting, plus provides
places to charge an iPod or other mobile devices, and uses the new Mini
Connected system to integrate smartphone functions into the vehicle.
Countryman buyers can choose from the standard 1.6-liter, 120-horsepower
four or can opt for the Countryman S, with a twin-scroll turbocharger
that brings power up to 180. Either way, this is Mini's interpretation
of the crossover, so it should be a lot of fun to drive. As a crossover,
it is probably the most functional Mini in the lineup. It offers cargo
volume-41 cubic feet with the rear seats down-and all-wheel drive. Mini
ALL4 uses an electrohydraulic differential to distribute power front to
rear, with up to 50 percent of power going to the rear wheels. Mini also
says that 100 percent of the power can be shifted to any wheel under
severe conditions. No EPA numbers were available today, but Mini
anticipates that when they're complete, the Countryman will be the most
fuel-efficient crossover in the U.S. Even if you have never seen a photo
of the Countryman, if you imagine what a Mini crossover would be, you'd
be pretty close. This model seems to stay true to the Mini brand.

2011 Nissan Juke
One of the stand-out debuts at last month's Geneva Motor Show
last month was generally agreed to be the Nissan Juke crossover, though not necessarily for all the right reasons. There's no doubt the Juke will continue to stop people in their tracks both at the New York Auto Show and when it hits U.S. roads late this year -- and that's exactly what Nissan is hoping for.
If you followed our Geneva coverage, you already know that the Juke is a uniquely styled vehicle, to say the least. Nissan deliberately went funky with the styling to make it a standout in the ever-crowding compact crossover market, drawing cues from rally cars to emphasize the Juke's sporting pretentions. If you were hoping the Juke would look different by the time it showed up at your local dealer, we're sorry to disappoint. The U.S.-spec vehicle will be virtually identical to its Euro-spec twin. Lending the most credence to the Juke's sportiness is its drivetrain. A new 1.6-liter direct-injected and turbocharged four-cylinder makes its North American debut in the Juke producing "180-plus horsepower and 170-plus pound-feet of torque," according to the automaker. We hope to have exact numbers closer to the Juke's on-sale date. Regardless, the engine is mounted to Nissan's Continuously Variable Transmission as standard equipment, though if you skip the S trim level and move up to the SV or SL trims, you can get a six-speed manual.
Unfortunately, the manual transmission is only offered with front-wheel drive. If you want Nissan's impressive torque-vectoring all-wheel drive system, it's CVT only. Despite that, Nissan's AWD system is an impressive piece. Using technology developed on the previous-generation GT-R, the system can send up to 50 percent of the power to the rear wheels and can distribute power from side to side on the rear axle as the computer sees fit to maximize stability and handling.

2011 Nissan Quest
So now we know the Quest is back, but that's just about all we know so far, short of the teaser image it's displaying during a presentation in New York on the eve of the 2010 New York show. Nissan did say though that the new Quest will offer more functionality and comfort without sacrificing space or driving prowess. That, and it will go on-sale in early 2011. Beyond that, what we know is what we can see, and what we can see is that while the last Quest looked something like a puffed-up Versa, the new one looks to be based in part on the 2007 Nissan Forum Concept. Though more restrained than the Forum, the new Quest clearly cribs some of its front-end styling from the concept. The rest, though, will have to wait until the van officially debuts, likely sometime later this year.
2011 Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid
Designed primarily as a way to reduce fleet emissions in the U.S., the Cayenne Hybrid is powered by the same advanced hybrid drivetrain as its platform-mate, the 2011 Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid. That means a 333-horsepower supercharged V-6 from the Audi S4 and a 47-horsepower electric motor can be found underhood, paired by a decoupling clutch to allow each to run independently. Combined, the two power sources make a solid 380 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque and run through an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The Cayenne S Hybrid features a 'hybrid controller' system that coordinates the two drive units through the center clutch, enabling the SUV to be driven up to nearly 40 mph on electric power alone. As we mentioned in our First Drive article, the Cayenne S Hybrid can also coast on the freeway at speeds up to 86 mph using only electric power. The Porsche's infotainment display monitors power usage and alerts the driver as to which mode the Cayenne is running in -- combined gas/electric, or one of those two alone.

2011 Volkswagen Touareg

, the 2011 Volkswagen Touareg will be making its first U.S. appearance at the 2010 New York Auto Show.
The second-generation Volkswagen Touareg SUV is news in and of itself, but the biggest story is the new hybrid model that bowed today in Geneva. How does more than 400 pounds of weight savings and 29 mpg combined grab you?
It's an impressive feat alright. Volkswagen says that despite the fact that they increased structural rigidity by 45 percent and added a hybrid drivetrain, the new Touareg is 441 pounds lighter than the outgoing model, dropping it to just under 5000 pounds. Those savings are significant, as Volkswagen says they help make the new Touareg 25 percent more efficient than the outgoing model.

The Touareg Hybrid is powered by a 3.3-liter, twin-supercharged V-6 mated to an electric motor, the same setup that you'll find in the new Porsche Cayenne Hybrid. Together, they can put out 374 peak horsepower and 428 peak pound-feet of torque. Be gentle to the throttle and they'll return 29 mpg combined, considerably more than the current gas powered models that can do an EPA-estimated 25 mpg highway at best. More than that, the electric motor can also move the Touareg Hybrid by itself up to 31 mph.
The new Touareg is expected to debut later this year in both Europe and the U.S. The Touareg Hybrid will join its gas powered siblings here in the U.S., but diesel models are expected to remain in Europe.
