The Paris Motor Show is the first big show of the season and our first glimpse in to the future of SUVs, Crossovers, and new technology for the European and potential U.S. markets.
Check out the vehicles below:
The Chevy Trax is scheduled to go on sale in 140 different countries, Chevrolet won't bring the new model to the U.S. market.
The Chevrolet Trax isn't a huge surprise, given that in March we saw patent drawings previewing a Chevrolet-badged crossover that was based on the new 2013 Buick Encore. The car has also been reskinned for European markets as the Opel Mokka, but producing a Chevrolet version will help General Motors sell the Trax in so-called emerging markets like Asia, South America, and so on.
Chevrolet confirms that the Trax won't be sold in the U.S. because it would allegedly infringe on the territory of the Equinox crossover. Still, there is quite a large margin between the vehicles: the Equinox is 19.3 inches longer and 2.6 inches wider than the Buick Encore, on which the Trax is based. With that in mind, it's not impossible that the two crossovers could attract different types of buyers. Regardless, the Equinox is one of Chevrolet's strongest-selling vehicles, so the brand would be loathe to reduce that sales momentum by introducing the Trax in our market.
The Trax will first launch in Mexico by the end of this year, and then Chevrolet will roll out the crossover around the world. There's no word yet on powertrain options or equipment, though the company promises the Trax, "delivers the flexibility, great fuel economy and car-like handling that urban explorers around the world require." We wouldn't be surprised if the same engines found in the Mokka wind up in the Trax; if so, expect buyers to choose between a 1.6-liter I-4, a turbocharged 1.4-liter I-4, or a 1.7-liter turbo-diesel I-4. Expect any of those three engine choices to be mated with a six-speed automatic transmission, along with either front- or all-wheel drive.
All-new EcoSport is based on Ford’s global B-segment platform and will go on sale for European customers within 18 months. It will be equipped with the award-winning 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine and will line up alongside all-new Kuga and later Ford Edge, a larger and more premium vehicle already popular in North America.
2014 Ford Transit
Ford notes this particular van is a European-spec model, but the Americanized model should be near carbon copy of what you see here.
The new Transit should not be confused with the Transit Custom, which debuted earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show. Although both vans are larger than the compact Transit Connect, the Transit trumps the Transit Custom in terms of payload size, powertrain configurations, and available body styles.
U.S.-spec Transits will be built within Ford's Kansas City, Missouri factory, which presently assembles F-150 trucks. Production should start in 2013, but Ford notes there will be a period of time -- likely through the 2014 model year -- where it will build and sell both E-Series and Transit models simultaneously. 2014 Ford Transit Connect
As the Transit Connect was first brought stateside in 2010, it may seem a little surprising that Ford's completely overhauling the vanlet so soon. In reality, the current vanlet is nearly 10 years old, and still rides upon the previous-generation Focus' platform. Needless to say, an update is more than welcome -- and what Ford has in store for the Transit Connect is more than a mere update.
Officials tell us the new Transit Connect -- along with its passenger-hauling version, known in Europe as the Tourneo Connect -- is an all-new vehicle, and rides on an all-new platform, likely an evolution of the C-segment architecture used to underpin the current global Focus and Escape model ranges. Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT Limited Edition, Wrangler Moab, Compass Overland
Jeep may be a uniquely American brand, but it's popular worldwide, which is why Jeep chose the upcoming Paris Motor Show to showcase its new models for the Continent.
The flagship model on display will be the Grand Cherokee SRT Limited Edition model, a special edition of the already exclusive Grand Cherokee SRT8. The European-spec model produces 468 horsepower from its 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 engine. Although the SRT8's fuel economy figures of 12 city, 18 highway already hit the pockets of American drivers hard, bear in mind European motorists pay as much as $10 a gallon for gasoline, so the SRT is even more of an indulgence there.
Next to be shown in Paris is the recently announced Jeep Wrangler Moab edition. The vehicle on display at Paris will wear new "Rock Lobster" red paint. The Moab edition splits the difference cost and content-wise between the mid-line Sahara model and flagship Rubicon.
Finally, Jeep will debut its Compass Overland model, bringing premium content to the brand's entry-level model in Europe.
2013 Land Rover Range Rover
Not only will the 2013 Range Rover offer significant weight savings and fuel economy improvements, but the next-gen SUV will also introduce a range of new features and tech to the nameplate when it arrives in North America this December. Land Rover has released more details on its upcoming flagship SUV leading up to its 2012 Paris Motor Show debut -- a few highlights are summarized below.
This second-generation Mitsubishi Outlander will conclude its highly successful run with the 2013 model year, making way for an all-new third-generation Outlander model that will debut in North America next year as a 2014 model crossover.
Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV
The production version of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV made an appearance at the 2012 Paris Motor Show this week. While Mitsubishi has showed several concepts leading to the Outlander PHEV over the past few years, the production model's specifications seem impressive. A pair of electric motors work in conjunction with a 2.0-liter gas engine to propel the Outlander PHEV.
The permanent magnet synchronous motors are mated to each axle. Both electric motors make 80 hp, but the rear motor develops 43 lb-ft of torque more than the front motor for a total of 144 lb-ft. The automaker's Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) works with a Twin Motor 4WD system to route power to the four wheels depending on traction needs.
In EV Drive Mode the battery pack provides enough juice for the Outlander PHEV to travel up to 34 miles. Total vehicle range is estimated to be about 547 miles. Other modes include combined gasoline and electric power as well as using the combustion engine as a generator to power the electric motors.
A full charge with a 200-volt AC charger requires about 4.5 hours, according to Mitsubishi. A CHAdeMO-spec DC quick-charger can charge the Outlander PHEV to 80 percent in roughly 30 minutes. Drivers can also select Battery Charge Mode to switch the gas engine to a generator on demand.
Nissan Juke NISMO
Designed and developed by Nissan's NISMO division in Japan, the range of affordable yet highly advanced performance cars is spearheaded by the new Juke NISMO.
Powered by a modified version of the acclaimed 1.6-litre direct injection turbocharged petrol engine that drives the DIG-T model, the Juke NISMO features a bespoke aerodynamics package and a revised chassis design to deliver an even more engaging driving experience.
Nissan Terra FCEV Concept
Nissan has shared its vision of what the future of the SUV might look by unveiling the TeRRA concept, which will be first shown at the upcoming 2012 Paris Motor Show. The concept combines Nissan's expertise in electric vehicles and 4x4s and is powered by a fuel cell feeding voltage to three electric motors. The front motor comes from the Nissan Leaf and provides power to the front two wheels. The two rear wheels, meanwhile, receive an in-wheel electric motor each -- similar to those seen in Nissan's past PIVO concepts. Nissan claims the cost of the fuel cell stack is one-sixth that of the stack from 2005, with precious metal content reduced to one-quarter of that of the predecessor unit. (Read More)
The new Qashqai 360 demonstrates Nissan's commitment to bringing premium features to the mass crossover market.
Available across Qashqai and Qashqai+2 ranges, the 360 can be specified with all engine and drivetrain combinations -- including the new 1.6-litre dCi with CO2 emissions from 119g/km. Qashqai 360 includes a number of premium design features and is fitted with Nissan's innovative Around View Monitor (AVM) as standard.
Volkswagen Cross Caddy
The Volkswagen Cross Caddy isn't coming to the U.S. It features striking 17-inch 'Canyon' wheels fitted with 205 / 50 R 17 tires and black coverings of the wheelarches and side sills and on the lower edges of the front and rear bumpers convey a rugged appearance. The front and rear silver undercarriage guards and the side impact protection bars on the sills complete the off-road look. The tinted rear side and back windows and the darkened rear light clusters also provide clear visual distinguishing features.
In addition to a unique design the autonomous 'Cross' brand also stands for a specially designed set of features. In addition to wheels and vehicle body kit, the new Cross Caddy boasts an attractive level of trim: a silver roof rail, air outlets painted gloss black with silver rims, front seats in two-tone design, height- and length-adjustable central armrest, steering wheel and leather trim with grey stitching on gear knob and handbrake lever and contrasting door interior trim create the appropriate ambience. Based on the Trendline specification, the Cross Caddy is available as a five- or seven-seater with short wheelbase both in 'Viper Green' and in another eight alternative colours.
Engines include TSI, TDI, natural gas and LPG engines ranging in power from 63 kW (86 PS) to 125 kW (170 PS), plus versions with DSG and 4MOTION four-wheel drive.
