SEMA 2015: The Asiatic Contingent - Top 10 Show Vehicles From Asian Companies

Nov 6, 2015
2016 is going to be a good year for fans of Japanese and Korean vehicles, particularly pickup trucks. With the 2016 Toyota Tacoma already in dealer stock, the 2017 Honda Ridgeline on its way, and the all-new Nissan Titan XD drumming up buzz around the nation, there’s no shortage of enthusiasts to placate. What better place than the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show to do it?
Here, we rate our Top 10 favorite Asian vehicles at the SEMA Show, at the bottom, you’ll find a massive gallery of tons of Japanese and Korean pickups, crossovers, and SUVs for your viewing pleasure.

1: Bob Boileau’s 1966 Datsun 520 Pickup
Primed and ready for its appearance in the 2015 Optima Batteries Ultimate Street Car Championship later this week, Bob’s Datsun is clean, low, and sleek. We loved seeing it at the Optima stand, looking ready for the autocross track and the show stand.

2: Onyx Off Road Nissan Titan
With a dazzling light bar, a desert-runner stance, and some very cool orange chrome Onyx Off Road forged wheels, this Nissan Titan may be the older model, but it’s still a fierce machine.

3: Honey-D Toyota Tundra TRD Pro
Alright, we have next to no information about this truck, but c’mon, just look at it! Finished in TRD Pro–spec Inferno Orange paint and sporting a fantastic widebody kit, Honey-D’s Tundra looks primed to bring some heat to Vaughn Gittin, Jr.’s Ultimate Fun Haver Ford F-150. Sure, it’s a little weird to take a Baja-ready TRD Pro and turn it into a lowered street machine (with knobby tires?), but still, this is one neat truck.

4: Toyota Land Cruiser 70-Series
A short wheelbase, knobby tires, snorkel, and right-hand drive set this Land Cruiser apart from the rest, and we want it bad. Covered in stickers from overland enthusiasts and Land Cruiser experts, we bet this grey-market import would be the perfect vehicle for a coast-to-coast dirt drive or a round-the-world expedition.

5: Nissan Sunny “GT-R”
A 2.0L turbocharged I-4, Airlift suspension, limited-slip differential, and vintage Nissan Skyline front clip turn this humble work truck into an all-out drift machine. Its 15x10-inch rear wheels just look like they’re begging to be spun into oblivion.

6: Rockstar Performance Garage Hyundai Tucson
Going the opposite route of many of the show trucks at SEMA, Hyundai took its humble, on-road oriented crossover and gave it a massive boost of dirt-and-mud clout. Massive, 32-inch tires barely fit under the lifted and modified unibody, which sits on top of a 6-inch suspension lift with King shocks. Updated turbo piping, a Mishimoto intercooler, Magnaflow exhaust, and K&N intake help the little 1.6L I-4 keep the big, heavy rolling stock moving forward in just about any terrain.

7: Honda Baja 1000 Ridgeline
Hinting at the styling of the 2017 Honda Ridgeline, the company’s upcoming Baja 1000 competitor looks primed for some serious dirt-slinging action. Under the bodywork is a production-derived 3.5L V-6, fortified with twin turbos and 550 hp. A long-travel suspension, tube-frame chassis, and General Grabber tires complete the getup. If the 2017 Ridgeline is half as cool as this truck, we’ll be first in line to test one.
Photo 14/50   |   Sema 2015 Asian Truck And Suv Army Toyota Sienna Uuv
8: Toyota Sienna UUV
Yep. We still want one. Toyota’s Sienna UUV is arguably the coolest van at the SEMA Show, with suicide front doors, rear perpendicular-sliding doors, a massive lift, and the underpinnings of the rugged Toyota Tacoma. The odds of this concept reaching production are nil, but we can still dream, right?
Photo 15/50   |   2016 Nissan Titan XD Triple Nickel Front Three Quarter
9: Nissan Titan XD Triple Nickel
A collaboration between Cummins and Nissan brought us the Titan XD Triple Nickel, an aero-enhanced pickup that is seeking land speed records and nothing else. With aerodynamic wheel covers, an enhanced front fascia and underbody, extensive roll cage, and rear drag parachute, the Titan XD has all the ingredients to be a speedy contender.

10: Project Real Steel Toyota Tundra
A Red Aluminum wrap drapes around this lifted, widened Toyota Tundra, which was part of Truckin Magazine’s SEMA contingent this year. With no extraneous stickers or distracting bodywork, Real Steel is a gentleman’s show truck, with just the perfect amount of flash.
