GearWrench XL 53-inch Roller Cabinet - Tool of the Month
Premium Tool Storage From One of Our Favorite Brands
Over our year and a half of extreme tool testing, several manufacturers have stood out for providing quality tools, impressive value, and superior performance. GearWrench is one of those brands, with their tools ranking high in multiple comparisons. We were pleasantly surprised to find out GearWrench is now branching out into tool storage with its line of GearWrench XL premium toolboxes, cabinets, and carts. For this issue's Tool of the Month, we ordered the new 53-inch nine-drawer roller cabinet and evaluated the cabinet compared to other brand name toolboxes. The results were impressive.
Right off of the shipping pallet, everyone agreed the GearWrench XL 83158 ($1,495.99 at amazon.com) was a great-looking box with its engine-turn drawer handle coatings that are clear-coated for a long-lasting luster. Good looks are nice, but engineering and durability are more important in the world of professional tool storage. Thankfully, the GearWrench XL features its intuitive Trigger Lock drawer system, which means the entire inner drawer handle lifts up at an angle, releasing the drawer lock mechanism. This keeps the drawers in place and opens with a natural, smooth pull operation. Smooth also properly describes the ball-bearing drawer slides, with the large top drawer and tall bottom drawer receiving double ball-bearing slides for extra weight capacity. Another trick feature is GearWrench's auto return, which aids in closing the drawer the final inch or so. This prevents drawers from slamming shut, while still making sure the drawers do in fact close.
During our testing, we appreciated the included drawer liners, padded top liner for a work station, and barrel-style lock mechanism for maximum security. Large 5x2-inch polyurethane casters (two with locks) made moving the cabinet a breeze. The biggest benefit for the XL-series of tool storage is the sheer size of the 53-inch-wide roller cabinet. Rated at 15,661 ci of storage, the XL cabinet can swallow up most mechanics' tool sets with ease. For those with large socket and ratchet collections, the top drawer is a full 48 inches wide and can hold up to 132 pounds of tools. That's more than enough for all the ¼-, ⅜-, and ½-inch socket sets you have. Each drawer on the left side of the cabinet is 29.5 inches wide, which is larger than most standard toolbox or utility cart drawers, and you still have four drawers that measure 16 inches wide on the right side, one of which is 11.5 inches tall for power tools. Our only gripe, and it's a small one, is the overall depth of the cabinet. At 15.5 inches deep, the drawers aren't as big as some others in this size category, however, for the price you won't find anything this nice that compares. If you're in the market for a professional roller cabinet with premium features for a price that is thousands less than other big name tool brands, the GearWrench XL is just what you've been looking for.
