10 Cars That Weigh More Than the 2015 Ford F-150 SuperCrew

OFFICIAL: 2015 Ford F-150 is a Lightweight

When Ford released an update on the 2015 F-150 earlier this week, the dramatic difference in weight between the 2014 steel-body and 2015 aluminum-body F-150 Lariat SuperCrew caught our attention. According to Ford, the 2015 F-150 Lariat’s aluminum-alloy body helps cut weight by as much as 700 pounds compared to the 2014 model.
Impressed, we asked Ford PR rep Mike Levine for the curb weight of a less-optioned truck, the base model 2015 F-150 SuperCrew. He came back with 4475 pounds -- the preliminary curb weight from Ford of a 2015 F-150 4x2 SuperCrew equipped with the 3.5-liter V-6 engine.
If you just exhaled a low whistle, that is the appropriate response; for a full-size pickup truck with the shortest bed and the largest cab configuration available to weigh in under 4500 pounds is a startling feat of engineering. Consider that a steel-bodied 2014 F-150 4x2 SuperCrew with the same powertrain weighs in at 5128 pounds (per Ford Motor Company), a number in line with the F-150’s current competition:

The new 2015 F-150 SuperCrew is also 210 pounds lighter than the Ford's lightest 2014 F-150, a base model, regular cab 4x2, which tips the scales at 4685 pounds (though not lighter than Chevrolet's smallest, regular cab 4x2 Silverado 1500 which weighs in at 4387 pounds.)
Since we ran out of full-size pickups to compare it to, we dove into our testing archive and found ten cars that weigh more than the 2015 F-150 SuperCrew:
1. 2014 Porsche Panamera Turbo: 4510 pounds
2. 2014 Audi A8 L TDI AWD: 4529 pounds
3. 2015 Hyundai Genesis V-8: 4588 pounds (the Genesis V-6 AWD is only 2 pounds lighter than the 2015 F-150 SuperCrew at 4473 pounds)
4. 2015 Kia K900 V-8: 4624 pounds
5. 2014 Tesla Model S P85+: 4633 pounds
6. 2014 Maserati Ghibli AWD: 4648 pounds
7. 2014 Mercedes-Benz S550: 4786 pounds
8. 2014 Rolls-Royce Wraith: 5328 pounds
9. 2014 Rolls-Royce Ghost: 5500 pounds
10. 2014 Bentley Flying Spur W-12, AWD: 5644 pounds
Many on the list shouldn’t be a surprise. It’s not hard to see how ultra-high-end luxury barges from Bentley, Rolls-Royce, and Mercedes-Benz can outweigh the F-150, given the way these luxury brands swaddle their clientele in leather, wood, and precious metals. More surprising might be the curb weight of the Audi A8 L, since Audi pioneered aluminum-alloy construction with the original A8. The hefty curb weight of the Tesla Model S also comes as a bit of a shock, until you remember the Model S’ aluminum body rests atop 6381 lithium-ion laptop batteries. That an F-150 weighs less than a Porsche Panamera Turbo? Well, that is just silly.
So, the 2015 Ford F-150 apparently has a several-hundred-pound advantage over its truck competition and many large cars, but we will have to wait until we test it to determine whether such dramatic weight loss negatively impacts functionality, durability, or even a low base price. Stay tuned.
