2006 Diesel Power Challenge Winning 6.6L Duramax LB7

Inside the engine that won the first Diesel Power Challenge

Back in 2006, Nick D’Amico showed up at the first Diesel Power Challenge in an ’02 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD using a Duramax LB7 engine fitted with the factory turbocharger. A stock single turbo!? That would be unheard of at DPC these days, but Nick had worked out a plan with Steve Cole at TTS Inc. Together, they figured out how to wring out the most power from GM’s common-rail diesel engine which, at that time, had only been available to the public for five years.

The formula they devised involved using stronger internal parts, hand-ported heads, custom programming, a custom CP3 injection pump, a lift pump upgrade, and a hefty dose of nitrous oxide when needed. Using a cold-air intake and a 4-inch exhaust, the engine was able to make 721 hp and 1,369 lb-ft of torque at the rear wheels. With the help of a TTS Inc. triple-disc torque converter, rear traction bars, shocks, and all-terrain tires, Nick managed to put that power to the ground.
During the first DPC, he laid out the most power on the dyno, then ran the fastest times on the dragstrip—both with and without a 10,000-pound trailer in tow. That was followed with a solid mid-pack performance in the sled pull and a second-best fuel economy rating of 17.5 mpg during a 49.9-mile drive. Just like the champions of DPC who would follow, Nick proved that a well-planned build and a dialed-in driver are a true winning combination. Steve tells us the Chevy went through many transformations before it was eventually purchased by an eager buyer who wanted the truck since seeing it for the first time in the pages of Diesel Power.
