Photographers: Courtesy of Manufacturers
For model year 2016 there will be more than 25 new diesel car, wagon, and SUV models to choose from here in the U.S. They're all clean, powerful, and efficient-with some of the best mpg ratings of any vehicles that don't rely on a battery pack. We've compiled all the new models, updates, changes, prices, specifications, and fuel economy ratings that are currently available. Use our guide to find out which diesel vehicle is right for you. Then, do yourself a favor and go testdrive a brand-new diesel car or SUV. It doesn't cost a penny for you to get some time behind the wheel, and it's hard to go wrong if you choose to buy any vehicle on this list.
Audi
Photo 2/40   |   The Audi A3 TDI sedan was introduced as an all-new vehicle for 2015. The '16 model is one of the most fuel-efficient luxury vehicles available with its highway rating of 43 mpg.
A3
The compact '16 A3 TDI sedan is mostly unchanged compared to the all-new model introduced for 2015, and it uses the EA288 2.0L I-4 engine with 150 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque (also found in all Volkswagen TDI cars). A rearview camera, parking sensors, heated mirrors, heated washer nozzles, and the aluminum interior package are now standard equipment for all models. There are also additions to standard features on Prestige and Premium Plus trims, changes to option packages, and a new Ibis White paint color. Pricing for the A3 TDI starts at $33,200.
Photo 3/40   |   2016 Audi A6 TDI Diesel Exterior New Front Driving
Photo 4/40   |   The '16 Audi A6 also gets a new look this year and gets up to 38 mpg on the highway using the 3.0L V-6.
A6
The '16 A6 TDI midsize sedan is mechanically the same as the previous year, with power delivered by a 3.0L V-6 engine that makes 240 hp and 428 lb-ft of torque while returning up to 38 mpg. For 2016, it gets an all-new exterior design for what Audi calls "a more dynamic stance and a greater presence on the road." In other words, Audi made it look a lot cooler for 2016. The changes include an all-new front fascia with the Audi "Singleframe" grille, new front bumper design, LED headlamps, rear end design, LED brake lights, and trapezoidal tailpipes. There are also new interior colors, trim inlay material options, and a "Design Selection" Flint Gray interior available. The MMI entertainment/navigation system gets 4G LTE connectivity, and there's a new Stop & Go function for the automatic cruise control. Pricing for the A6 TDI sedan starts at $59,500.
Photo 5/40   |   2016 Audi A7 TDI Diesel Interior Steering Wheel 12 Inch Screen Wood Trim
Photo 6/40   |   The Audi A7 receives an exterior face-lift for model year 2016 that includes new front and rear end designs. It continues to receive power from a 3.0L V-6 diesel engine with 240 hp and 428 lb-ft of torque that allows the sport sedan to get up to 38 mpg.
A7
Like the A6, the '16 A7 TDI gets new looks for the front and rear ends, a new infotainment center, and the Stop & Go feature. The A7 also gets new interior colors, new trim materials, and a Cedar Brown "Design Selection" interior option. Pricing for the '16 A7 TDI starts at $70,400.
Photo 7/40   |   The '16 Audi A8 L TDI is the only diesel-powered fullsize luxury sedan that will be sold in the U.S. for 2016.
A8 L
Having been redesigned for 2015, the '16 A8 L TDI is almost the same, except for new interior options similar to the A6 and A7, including a "Design Selection" with Vermont Brown leather and two types of wood inlays. The starting price is $85,200.
Q5
The '16 Q5 TDI is mostly unchanged, with a now-standard panoramic sunroof and three-spoke steering wheel. There are some changes to option content, and adaptive suspension is a stand-alone option on the Premium Plus model. The Q5 TDI starts at $48,100.
Photo 8/40   |   2016 Audi Q7 TDI Diesel All New Model Exterior Front Driving
Photo 9/40   |   The '16 Audi Q7 will no longer share a chassis with the Porsche Cayenne and VW Touareg. The all-new design incorporates lots of aluminum for a curb weight that is more than 700 pounds lighter than the outgoing model, making the Q7 more fuel efficient and much quicker.
Q7
Completely new from the ground up, the fullsize '16 Q7 TDI SUV will be more than 700 pounds lighter than the previous model thanks to lots of aluminum parts. The fenders, doors, hood, tailgate, multilink suspension, hollow halfshafts, and forged steering knuckles will all be made of aluminum. The Q7 also lost weight by replacing the transfer case with a quattro limited-slip differential that's integrated into the transmission. No specifications have been released for the Q7 TDI that will come to the U.S., but we already know Europeans will get two different versions of the 3.0L V-6 diesel. Across the Atlantic Ocean, the standard Q7 is tuned for performance with 272 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque, which is good for a 0-to-60-mph time more than 2 seconds quicker than the outgoing model. The engine in the Q7 Ultra makes 218 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, which is used to get more than 41 mpg on English roads. Pricing, specifications, and official fuel economy figures for the U.S. model will be released closer to the launch of the Q7 TDI.
BMW
Photo 10/40   |   2016 BMW 3 Series Sport Line Front Driving High Speed
Photo 11/40   |   The exterior of the '16 BMW 3-Series has been "freshened" for a new look, which includes a standard Sport Line package. The 2.0L-powered sedan and Sports Wagon also get new front and rear suspension parts and an upgraded steering setup to improve ride and handling.
3-Series
The popular 3-Series sedan and wagon have undergone a "lifecycle freshening" for model year 2016 that includes a sharper body design in the front and rear, new LED headlamps, and a now-standard Sport Line package. All diesel models also get new front struts, new rear damper technology, and a redesigned electric power steering system to go along with the 2.0L I-4 diesel under the hood that makes 180 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. Prices start at $39,850 for the 328d sedan, $41,850 for the all-wheel-drive 328d xDrive sedan, and $44,150 for the 328d xDrive Sports Wagon.
Photo 12/40   |   A 3.0L I-6 engine that puts out 255 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque powers the '16 BMW 535d and 535d xDrive. The all-wheel-drive 535d xDrive has a fuel economy rating of up to 37 mpg and the rear-wheel-drive 535d achieves as many as 38 mpg.
5-Series
The 5-Series sedan is mostly unchanged for 2016, and a 3.0L I-6 engine that makes 255 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque powers both the 535d and 535d xDrive. There are some changes to standard equipment, including the addition of enhanced USB and Bluetooth functions and a Mobile Office with text messaging, email, voice memos, and more. Pricing starts at $57,350 for the rear-wheel-drive 535d and $59,650 for the all-wheel-drive 535d xDrive model.
Photo 13/40   |   The BMW 7-Series is all-new for model year 2016 and features a futuristic "Carbon Core" passenger compartment made with composite materials to greatly reduce weight. There are rumors that an I-6 diesel engine with four (yes, four!) turbochargers will eventually be offered here in the U.S., but BMW confirmed for us there would be no diesel 7-Series model on sale here for 2016.
7-Series
For 2016, the 7-Series is all-new and 190 pounds lighter than the previous model, thanks to a new "Carbon Core" passenger cell made with a combination of carbon fiber and "ultra-high-tensile" aluminum and steel. There have been rumors about a quad-turbocharged diesel engine possibly coming to these shores, but a representative from BMW confirmed there would be no 7-Series diesels sold in the U.S. for model year 2016.
Photo 14/40   |   2016 BMW X3 Diesel Front View Driving Off Road
X3
The 2.0L-powered X3 small SUV is mostly unchanged for 2016. It gets standard enhanced USB and Bluetooth functionality like the 5-Series, with features including iSpeech, which uses voice controls for searching through music files and phone contacts. The storage-compartment dividers are now optional, and the cost of the navigation system package has been reduced. The xDrive28d starts at $42,100.
Photo 15/40   |   The '16 BMW xDrive35d is a "Sports Activity Vehicle" that uses a 3.0L I-6 diesel engine with 255 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque that propels it from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.5 seconds.
X5
The X5 xDrive35d SUV will be mostly unchanged for model year 2016 and will continue to use the 3.0L I-6 engine. The 2015 model will continue production into November, which is four months later than the gasoline-powered models. Pricing for the xDrive35d starts at $57,700.
Chevrolet
Photo 16/40   |   2016 Chevrolet Cruze Exterior Passenger Side
Photo 17/40   |   The Chevrolet Cruze will be all-new and 250 pounds lighter for model year 2016, but there will be no diesel version available until the 2017 cars arrive. When it finally gets here, the next-generation Cruze will have a version of this European 1.6L diesel engine that makes 136 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque.
Cruze
The '16 Cruze is all-new and features a stronger body structure that provides more interior room while weighing about 250 pounds less than the outgoing model. Unfortunately, the '16 Cruze will not arrive in the U.S. until early calendar year 2016 and, when it does, the lineup won't include a diesel model. That will become available for model year 2017, when the Cruze gets a version of the 1.6L diesel engine that makes 136 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque in some current European GM models.
Jeep
Photo 18/40   |   2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel Off Road Rocks
Photo 19/40   |   The '16 Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel will continue to receive power from a 3.0L V-6 engine with 240 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. While Fiat-Chrysler America has not made any announcements about the 2016 model, industry spy reports say the electronic joystick transmission shifter will be replaced with a more traditional gated unit.
Grand Cherokee
Pricing and updates for the '16 Grand Cherokee have not yet been announced by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles as of this writing, but the Mopar sleuths at Allpar.com have some guesses based on spy reports. They say the "Curse-O-Matic" joystick shifter will be replaced with a more traditional gated unit, along with possible tweaks to the lights and other styling features for a "minor refresh." As far as diesel goes, we expect the VM Motori 3.0L V-6 engine that puts out 240 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque will remain unchanged.
Land Rover
Photo 20/40   |   2016 Land Rover Range Rover Sport TD6 Diesel High Speed Driving
Photo 21/40   |   For model year 2016, Land Rover is introducing two new diesel models: the Range Rover Td6 and the Range Rover Sport Td6. Both are powered by a 3.0L V-6 diesel engine that creates 254 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque that's estimated to return up to 28 mpg.
Range Rover and Range Rover Sport
The Jaguar Land Rover Company is bringing two new diesel SUV models to the U.S. for model year 2016. Both the Range Rover Td6 and Range Rover Sport Td6 are powered by a 3.0L V-6 diesel engine that makes 254 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque while returning an estimated 28 mpg highway for both models (official EPA figures are not yet available). This output combined with a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission allows the Range Rover Td6 to go from 0 to 60 mph in 7.4 seconds and helps the Sport reach that speed in just 7.1 seconds. Along with all the luxury features you'd expect to find in a Land Rover, both models have a full-time four-wheel-drive setup, and the Range Rover Td6 even has an off-road-friendly low-range transfer case. Pricing for the '16 Range Rover Td6 starts at $86,450, and the base price for the '16 Range Rover Sport Td6 is $66,450.
Mercedes-Benz
Photo 22/40   |   2016 Mercedes Benz C300d Diesel Passenger Side
Photo 23/40   |   The '16 Mercedes-Benz C300d will be the first diesel-powered C-Class sold in the U.S. in many years. It will use a 2.1L I-4 compound-turbocharged engine that will be housed in the all-new C-Class design that was introduced for 2015.
C-Class
Mercedes-Benz is introducing the '16 C300d 4Matic after quite a few years without a diesel C-Class available in the U.S. It will use the chassis of the current sedan that was all-new for model year 2015, be powered by a 2.1L I-4 diesel engine, and have full-time all-wheel drive. The C300d 4Matic is scheduled to go on sale in February 2016; Mercedes-Benz will release full specifications and pricing closer to the vehicle's official launch date.
Photo 24/40   |   The '16 E250 BlueTec is available in both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations powered by a 2.1L engine with 195 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. The 4Matic (all-wheel drive) is capable of getting up to 38 mpg and the two-wheel-drive model is rated at an impressive 42 mpg highway.
E-Class
The '16 E250 BlueTec and E250 BlueTec 4Matic sedans are unchanged, except for a new stereo head unit in the dash, simplified option packages, a new Night Package, and available Selenite Grey metallic paint. Both diesel E-Class models use a compound-turbocharged 2.1L I-4 diesel engine that makes 195 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. The rear-wheel-drive E250 BlueTec starts at $52,650, and the all-wheel-drive E250 4Matic BlueTec starts at $55,150.
Photo 25/40   |   The fullsize '16 Mercedes-Benz GL350 BlueTec SUV comes with a 3.0L V-6 that makes 240 hp and 455 lb-ft of torque and returns nearly 26 mpg.
GL SUV
The '16 GL350 BlueTec fullsize SUV is the only Mercedes-Benz other than the Sprinter van to be sold in the U.S with the 3.0L V-6 diesel engine, which makes 240 hp and 455 lb-ft of torque and is hooked to a nine-speed automatic transmission. The new model is unchanged for this year, except for a standard five years of Mbrace services, and the deletion of Cinnabar Red Metallic paint to make room for a "designo" Cardinal Red special edition for 2017. Pricing for the '16 GL350 BlueTec SUV starts at $64,550.
Photo 26/40   |   2016 Mercedes Benz GLE Class Diesel Front View Off Road Rock Climb
Photo 27/40   |   Formerly known as the Mercedes-Benz ML350 BlueTec SUV, the '16 GLE300d SUV represents the company's new naming system that uses "GL" for all SUVs (and ditches the "BlueTec" moniker for a simple "d"). The GLE300d also gets a new look for both the exterior and the interior to go along with the name change. It uses a 2.1L compound-turbocharged diesel engine that makes 201 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque and is rated for up to 29 mpg highway.
GLE SUV
After getting a four-cylinder engine transplanted in place of the V-6 diesel for the '15 model, the SUV line formerly known as the ML-Class gets a whole new name, along with lots of changes inside and out. The '16 GLE300d is powered by the same 2.1L used in the E-Class, except it's tuned to make 201 hp (instead of 195 hp), along with 369 lb-ft of torque. Compared to the outgoing ML-Class, the GLE300d has new fenders, front and rear bumpers, full LED taillamps, and a completely redesigned cabin. The base price for the GLE300d is $52,500.
Photo 28/40   |   The all-new '16 Mercedes-Benz GLC SUV is replacing the GLK SUV that featured a diesel model. Unfortunately, there is no word about a diesel version of the GLC...yet.
GLK SUV
Sadly, the GLK250 BlueTec 4Matic small SUV is being discontinued. It will be replaced by the '16 GLC, which is not slated to have a diesel variant during its first year on sale in the U.S.
Porsche
Photo 29/40   |   2016 Porsche Cayenne Diesel High Speed Driving Ocean Highway
Photo 30/40   |   The '16 Porsche Cayenne Diesel uses a 3.0L V-6 with 240 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque to get up to 29 mpg and sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 7.1 seconds when equipped with the Sport Chrono package.
Cayenne
The diesel model is no longer the least expensive trim in the Cayenne SUV lineup, but the diesel model does still come with a 3.0L V-6 with 240 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque that helps it scoot from 0 to 60 mph in just 7.1 seconds. Unlike the all-new Audi Q7, the Porsche continues to use the more truck-like chassis and selectable four-wheel-drive system that's shared with the Volkswagen Touareg. Specific changes for the '16 Cayenne diesel haven't yet been announced, but the starting price will be $63,295.
Volkswagen
Volkswagen announced the majority of '16 TDI models will get its new MIB II infotainment system. It integrates with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and MirrorLink to let users select and control apps from most major brand phones directly through the head unit. It also includes a new generation of the Car-Net subscription service that allows you to do things like lock/unlock the doors remotely using a smartphone app. At the time of this writing, except for the Touareg SUV, pricing has not been announced for any '16 VW TDI models.
Photo 31/40   |   2016 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible TDI Diesel Top Down Front View
Photo 32/40   |   The '16 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible TDI has a 2.0L diesel engine that makes 150 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. A new Automatic Post-Collision braking system that keeps the car from rolling into danger after the airbags are set off is standard on all Beetle TDI models.
Beetle
The '16 Beetle TDI and Beetle Convertible TDI now have a simplified naming structure with just SE and SEL trim levels. Along with the rest of the VW TDI lineup (except for the Touareg), Beetles use the EA288 2.0L I-4 diesel that was introduced for 2015, with 150 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. New Automatic Post-Collision braking (that keeps the car from rolling into danger after the airbags are set off) is standard. New colors will be introduced throughout the model year (four for the hardtop, and five for the convertible), and there's a new lighting package available with Bi-Xenon HID headlamps, LED running lamps, and an LED license plate light.
Photo 36/40   |   Like most VW models for 2016, the Golf TDI and Golf Sportwagen TDI come with a new infotainment system that allows phone apps to be controlled from the stereo head unit in the dash. There is also a new Driver Assistance Package that includes a Parking Steering Assistant with Park Assist that steers for the driver during parallel parking maneuvers.
Golf
The Golf TDI and SportWagen TDI were completely redesigned for 2015, and the standard features for the '16 models are mostly unchanged except for the addition of the new infotainment system with a 6.3-inch screen, a standard rearview camera, and a keyless push-button start system for the SE trim. A new Driver Assistance Package is available for SE and SEL models and is packed with Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning with Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Warning with Lane Assist, Blind Spot Monitor, Park Distance Control, and Parking Steering Assistant with Park Assist, a system that steers for the driver during parallel parking.
Photo 37/40   |   The '16 Jetta TDI now comes with the MIB II infotainment system, speed-sensitive electric power steering, and Automatic Post-Collision Braking as standard equipment.
Jetta
The '16 Jetta TDI sedan is mostly unchanged from the previous year and now comes with the MIB II system (using a 5-inch screen for the S model and a 6.3-incher for upper-level trims), speed-sensitive electric power steering, and Automatic Post-Collision Braking as standard equipment. For 2016, the mid-level SE trim gets a standard rearview camera and the SEL Premium receives automatic headlamps with rain-sensing wipers. New driver assistance systems (Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning with Autonomous Emergency Braking, and Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Traffic Alert) are optional for the SEL and SEL Premium trims.
Passat
The Passat sedan is getting what VW calls a "major face-lift" for model year 2016. Along with some new sheetmetal, headlamps, taillights, and wheels, it will come with a "more premium" interior, an enhanced instrument panel, new infotainment system, and new driver-assistance features. Photos, pricing, and details will be released closer to the vehicle launch.

Photo 40/40   |   The '16 VW Touareg TDI receives some changes to standard equipment along with an impressive price drop of $2,000 for the entry-level model.
Touareg
The fullsize Touareg SUV got its makeover for 2015, so the '16 Touareg TDI receives only changes to the standard equipment, including ventilated 14-way power seats for the Lux and Executive trims. It also features an impressive $2,000 price drop for the base model, a $1,720 decrease for the Lux, and a $1,045 reduction for the Executive trim. Pricing for the base model now starts at $50,245.
