In 2015, Rolls-Royce received a 3.9-plus-billion-dollar order for delivery of 589 of its MTU 8V 199 diesel engines for the British Army’s all-new Scout Specialist Vehicle. Versions of this powerplant are currently being used in Europe with the Pizarro II and ULAN infantry fighting vehicles along with the M 113, Piranha, and Boxer personnel carriers. The Scout SV will be an armored fighting vehicle that can be specially equipped for reconnaissance, command and control, repair, or recovery, and it will get the TE21 version of the 15.9L engine.
Photo 3/3   |   The twin-turbocharged MTU 8V 199 TE21 diesel engine is tuned to make 820 hp at 2,300 rpm and 2,212 lb-ft at 1,500 rpm. The 90-degree V-8 features dry sump oiling (or an optional conventional wet sump). Versions of the engine are currently used in the military vehicles of Austria, Germany, Netherlands, and Spain.
In this configuration, the twin-turbocharged V-8 is tuned to make 820 hp along with an impressive 2,212 lb-ft of torque for the battlefield. The horsepower peaks at 2,300 rpm while the torque hits its maximum rating at just 1,500 rpm. With a bore of more than 5 inches and a stroke of nearly 6 inches, the MTU 8V 199 has more than twice the displacement of the current Cummins, Duramax, or Power Stroke engines offered in civilian pickups. The large engine would have trouble fitting between the fenders of a ¾- or 1-ton truck with its length of almost 4 feet and a width of nearly 3½ feet. The engine weight of 2,502 pounds is also too much for a civilian truck, but the troops in the tracked Scout SV will probably be happy to have so much power and torque on hand whenever it’s needed.
