One turbocharger on a diesel engine is good. Two turbos is even better, right? Three compressors under the hood is a guaranteed party. So, what happens when you add one more? BMW is ready to let the diesel-loving public find out! Do I want to drive the first model lucky enough to get this powerplant? To quote reggae star Beenie Man, “Sim simma! Who got the keys to my Bimma?!”
Four Turbos?!
It may be hard to believe, but it’s time to open your mind to vehicles equipped by the manufacturers with four turbochargers attached to oil-burning engines. The ’91-to-’95 Bugatti EB110 was the first production vehicle to be sold with a quartet of turbos as standard equipment, but it ran on gasoline. The wild mid-engine supercar blew my mind when it hit the pages of Motor Trend back when I was just 14 years old.
This monster came out while I was still learning how to drive in the fields outside of Bakersfield, California, behind the steering wheels of a ’70 GMC Sierra Grande with a torquey 396ci big-block engine and my dad’s first car, a ’41 Dodge with a transplanted truck transmission that required double-clutching. You might be surprised how well a 50-year-old car with less than 100 hp can climb dirt hills when a “Granny-Low” gear is engaged.

The ’91-to-’95 Bugatti EB110 was the first production vehicle to be sold with four turbochargers, but it was powered by gasoline, not diesel. This ’90s mid-engine supercar was capable of hitting 218 mph, and it looked like it was designed to be printed on posters that hang on the bedroom walls of teenagers.

The Bugatti EB110 was like nothing I’d ever imagined. It was powered by a 3.5L V-12 engine that made 560 hp and pushed the 3,500-pound car from 0 to 60 mph in less than 3.5 seconds—and to a top speed of 218 mph! In all, there were less than 140 examples built, but BMW is poised to bring quad-turbo power to the masses with its new TwinPower 3.0L I-6 engine.
More Than 41 Miles Per Gallon!
Along with creating 400 hp and 560 lb-ft of torque, BMW says the new four-turbo engine will be good for up to 41.3 mpg when fitted inside the fullsize, all-wheel-drive 750d xDrive luxury sedan. The car is also expected to scoot from 0 to 62 mph in only 4.6 seconds. In part, this is thanks to a one-of-a-kind “carbon core” that employs lightweight carbon fiber throughout much of the 7 Series cabin body structure.

Four turbochargers?! That’s right! The new BMW TwinPower B57 combines the output of two compact variable-geometry turbos in a single housing with two additional large ’chargers. Both small compressors and one of the large turbos are always in action, and the fourth turbo kicks in during hard acceleration inputs from the driver.

Will the Quad-Turbo Diesel Engine Come to the U.S.?
My guess is this powerplant will not be sold in the U.S. anytime soon—if ever. Unfortunately for us, the emissions requirements on this side of the pond are still much more strict than those for Europe and the rest of the world. That’s one of the reasons why the previous triple-turbo 3.0L diesel engine by BMW never made it over here, but that’s no reason to give up hope! A four-turbo factory diesel engine now exists!
