When engineers develop a diesel engine, they usually have a specific application in mind (a car, truck, boat, or some type of industrial or heavy-duty equipment). Powertrain specialists at Cummins didn’t follow this pattern when they conceptualized the QSG12. Instead, they focused on designing a powerplant that provides maximum efficiency and minimum complexity for use in such varied equipment as rock crushers, excavators, combines, and locomotives.
In order to make the QSG12 capable of handling different assignments, a number of adaptive features were instituted. One such characteristic is found in the wastegate turbocharger from Cummins Turbo Technologies. The ’charger can be mounted in two different positions to ease installation: down low with rear-exit exhaust or mid-mounted with a front output.
Usability is also enhanced, by the diesel particulate filter (DPF) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system’s ability to adapt to different installation spaces and mounting positions (vertical and horizontal). Even more options are found with the engine itself, which can be run at a 45-degree angle with no modifications. The oil-burner also supports mounting power takeoff (PTO) units on the front and rear, along with a side-mount hydraulic drive.
One of the engine’s major attributes that helps with different installations is its slim weight and size, which was achieved with a new sculpted engine block. The block design removes unnecessary mass while retaining needed high rigidity. To further decrease bulk, a composite oil pan and valve cover are used. These improvements help the QSG12 weigh in at 1,900 pounds, which is significantly lighter than its predecessor, the QSM11 that tipped the scales at 2,620 pounds. The advancement yields a 30 percent gain in the power-to-weight ratio over other engines in the same classification.

The QSG12 is a heavy-duty, industrial, Cummins I-6 engine designed to power a broad range of equipment. The powerplant is rated up to 513 hp and 1,696 lb-ft of torque and meets all Tier 4 final and EU Stage IV emissions standards.

The QSG12 is designed to meet Tier 4 Final and EU Stage IV emission standards. A single high-capacity electronic control module (ECM) is used to help integrate all components and systems. It controls everything from the air intake to the exhaust aftertreatment. With the module’s operation of the Xtra-High Pressure Injection (XPI) common-rail fuel system, multiple injection events can happen per cycle, giving flexibility to the injection timing and allowing for maximized performance and decreased emissions. The XPI used in conjunction with the DPF-SCR emissions system results in ultra-clean exhaust.
The engine’s G-series cylinder head uses a single cam-in-head that’s paired with a roller valvetrain. The head uses high-efficiency ports with two intake valves and a single exhaust valve per cylinder.
All the aforementioned innovations on the QSG12 come together in a state-of-the-art package that’s available in a broad power range of 335 to 512 hp and a peak torque of 1,700 lb-ft. The power and torque ranges, along with the ability to change configurations, allow the engine to fit the needs of a multitude of buyers.
