Something Completely Different
Year/Make/Model: ’79 Ford F-150
Owner: Colin Gleason
Hometown: Lake Villa, Illinois
Engine: 6.9L International IDI V-8
Transmission: BorgWarner T-19 four-speed manual
Odometer: 152,000 miles
Fuel Economy: 19 mpg
Modifications: 6.9L IDI engine, BorgWarner T-19 four-speed manual transmission, body lift, suspension lift, larger brakes, and upgraded steering
Owner says: “We traded a running, driving truck for this ‘project basket case,’ our first diesel. With the help of the folks at OilBurners and Ford Truck Enthusiasts, we were able to turn it into a real conversation piece that can be driven anywhere. Though the old IDI is not the most powerful engine in the world, it moves this ½-ton along very well, in addition to getting great mileage. One of the real charms is the simplicity of these engines, as well as the wealth of parts available.”

The Egg
Year/Make/Model: ’96 Renault Espace MK2
Owner: Oliver Kuhns
Hometown: Liverpool, United Kingdom
Engine: 2.1L Renault I-4
Transmission: Five-speed manual
Odometer: 209,000 miles
Fuel Economy: 52 mpg
Modifications: Runs on 100 percent vegetable oil, converted to push-button start, fullsize bed, and toilet
Owner says: “I get 40 mpg in heavy traffic in the city and have driven across Europe on one tank of fuel, averaging 52 mpg on the motorways. She has never broken down and has towed a few broken-down taxis in Liverpool. She is one of the last all-plastic minivans still on the road. The unibody frame was made from hot-galvanized steel at the factory, so there is no rust. I call her the “Egg,” because the body is prone to crack, similar to Chevrolet Corvettes’ panels.”
