Dad’s ’Burban

When your father has a truck obsession as you are growing up, it’s only a matter of time before that obsession gets passed down. “At one point, we had 27 classic trucks in the yard.” Cody Collins tells Truckin. “It didn’t take long for me to want my own.” When Collins was 1 year old, his father spotted a Suburban in a junkyard and tried to purchase it so that Collins and his brother could grow up riding in it, just like he had as a teenager. For several years, his father attempted to purchase the truck but to no avail.
As an adult, Collins never stopped looking for a Suburban that would fulfill his father’s dream. Then, he found a ’50 Chevy 3100 Suburban in Minnesota. Collins sold his custom bike to get the funds to purchase the classic truck. Done entirely in his carport, the Suburban was taken down to bare frame. The next step was bringing the Chevy closer to the ground. He singlehandedly added a full air ride system to the ’71 Camaro clip that was grafted onto the front of the frame and a custom built two-link in the rear. Eighteen-inch Riddler wheels fill up all four of the fat fenders.

After the suspension, Collins turned his attention to the motor adding a new LSX engine, which he immediately enhanced with valve train parts from a LS6 and detailed before installation. The bodywork was next, adding one-piece side windows and shaving everything he could. He had originally wanted to two-tone the Chevy but decided to stay clean and simple, opting for classic white paint with pinstripes in all the right places. For the interior, Collins enlisted the help of Matt Owings to install the black leather seats and Pioneer/Memphis Audio system.
When Collins was 15 years old, his father passed away unexpectedly. He was never able to achieve his dream of riding with his sons in a classic Suburban. However, Collins vowed to change that with his own truck. His Suburban, named “Daddy’s ’Burban,” is a tribute to his father’s legacy, and he can now carry on that tradition with his own two children.
