Patrick Whitcomb explains that his passion for diesels started before he could drive. “I grew up in a family with diesel pickups and dump trucks,” he says, with his first oil-burner being a 7.3L IDI engine in an ’89 Ford F-250. “It just escalated from there.”

Patrick purchased his current truck, an ’08 Ford F-450, in April 2007. In addition to serving as his daily driver (with four car seats for picking the kids up from school), the truck is used for hauling a trailer, sled pulling, drag racing, and competing in dyno events.
“It went 10.59 seconds at 131 mph in the quarter-mile, which I never thought was possible for a lifted crew cab dualie,” Patrick says.” I have done everything to the truck myself, building the engine with R&R billet connecting rods; coated and fly-cut pistons; a River City Diesel Stage 3 cam; ported heads, manifolds, and up-pipes; ARP head; ATI damper; and an Elite Diesel Engineering billet flexplate. I also built the transmission, installed the lift kit, and did all the custom fabricating for the turbocharger’s VGT-to-T4 adapter and wastegate piping. Pretty much every bolt on the truck has been touched by me.”
“I think my truck will excel in the sled pull. That’s the event where I have the most experience, but it will also do well on the dyno and won’t be anybody’s dog on the dragstrip despite its size and weight. I feel I have a very good chance at taking a podium spot at Diesel Power Challenge. I will give it all she’s got to try and get there. I am very excited to see what it will do and mostly just to meet everyone in Colorado and have a fun week with good people.”
