Jeff Builds a Tropical-Flavored Chevy for SEMA
While there are hundreds (if not thousands) of great truck shows all over the country, very few inspire reactions like the SEMA Show in Las Vegas. As one of the world’s largest trade shows, SEMA is the Holy Grail for some truck builders, particularly small businesses eager to make a splash on the Sin City scene.
That’s where Jeff Cleer and Voodoo Customs come in. The business’ aim is to connect owners with parts manufacturers and help them build amazing trucks, so he knew he had to create his own showstopper to prove his mettle. After picking up his ’16 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LTZ Z71 in May of 2016, Jeff and his team set about preparing the showroom-fresh truck for its 2016 SEMA Show debut. And so TikiMax was born, the fifth show vehicle from Voodoo.
The most obvious change from stock is the truck’s massive 12-inch lift, courtesy of Cognito Motorsports and featuring a white powdercoat from Screaming Turtle Specialty Coatings. The underbody is further enhanced with Cognito steering dampers, traction bars, and upper control arms, along with Deaver leaf springs and Fox remote reservoir shocks.
R1 Concepts brake rotors and ceramic pads sit under 22x12 Anthem Off-Road Aviator wheels with a gloss black/machined finish, all wrapped in 40x15.50R22 Toyo Open Country M/T tires. The stance is one of the owner’s favorite features of the truck (while exiting a show one time, Jeff saw a man operating a lawn mower across the street run into a tree because he was so distracted by TikiMax!).
The truck’s exterior keeps to a slick monochromatic theme. The color-matched front and rear bumpers come from Bodyguard Truck Accessories, while the front end is enhanced with an RK Sport ram-air hood, intimidating Diode Dynamics LED headlamps, and a T-Rex billet grille. Capping off the bed is an UnderCover Elite LX tonneau with SwingCases.
Speaking of the bed, it forms the basis of that TikiMax name. Taking inspiration from his family’s favorite vacation spots, Jeff chose the name in homage to the Cleer clan’s collection of tiki statues, which now includes the custom truck bed. The cargo box is finished off with the Retroliner from Bed Wood and Parts. Jeff and his team wanted the ash wood to stand out, so it was gently torched to bring out the grain before being trimmed in the midcentury tiki style, including the underside of the tonneau.
The tropical flavor continues indoors, which incorporates upgraded leather seating with the TikiMax logo embroidered on the headrests. Bamboo trim appears throughout the interior, giving it a distinct islander vibe. It’s a great look.
Since its SEMA debut, TikiMax has made appearances in Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Indiana. In fact, the truck took First Place at a local show that raised money for a veteran’s memorial; Jeff’s late father was a Vietnam veteran, making the victory (and the truck) even more meaningful.
So what’s next for Jeff’s massive pickup? While it’s mostly finished, Voodoo Customs might still pursue an even taller lift, and the audio system might get some attention. But with more than 11,000 miles and counting, Jeff’s Chevy doesn’t sit idle much. And thanks to its show experience all over the nation, we hope to see TikiMax in person again sometime soon.

Fun Fact: “It takes a two-step ladder for some of my family to get in and enjoy a cruise. When you can look over at the driver of a tractor-trailer and see the look of disbelief on his face, it's pretty cool.”
