Owner Says: ”What started as $95 worth of paint transformed this ’99 Super Duty into what it is today. The clearcoat was flaking off with every wash, so we decided to paint it. The truck was super clean and straight with only 74,000 miles when we started. All the work was done in three months.”

I’m happy to say this 20-year-old truck is now rust-free and running like a champ. I have my eyes set on a compound-turbocharger setup next. The factory Holset Turbochargers HX35 turbo will look good as a garage ornament.”

Owner says: “I bought this truck originally with a 5.7L Hemi (with a rod knocking) and automatic transmission. I got it home, started the engine swap, and two years later, I drove it out of the garage under its own power. I spent countless hours fabricating everything myself. I’m a heavy-duty diesel mechanic by trade, so I built the engine, transmission, and transfer case by myself, minus the machine work.”

Frankendodge
Year/Make/Model: ’98 Dodge Ram 2500
Owner: Eric Branham
Hometown: Ardrossan, Alberta, Canada
Engine: 5.9L Cummins I-6
Transmission: 48RE four-speed automatic
Odometer: 421,000 kilometers (262,000 miles)
Fuel Economy: 7 mpg
Modifications: Trussed Ford kingpin Dana 60 front axle, 4.10 gears, front and rear lockers, 15-inch Ram SRT-10 brakes, NP271 transfer case, compound turbochargers (BorgWarner Turbo Systems S363SXE into a BorgWarner S478), steel wastegate manifold, 13mm P7100 injection pump, Dynomite Diesel Products Super Mental Injectors, ARP 425 cylinder-head studs, Mahle Industries big-bowl pistons, Turbosmart 44mm external wastegate, Manton Pushrods pushrods, Hamilton Cams beehive valvesprings, 5-inch dual exhaust, 5-inch aluminum driveshaft, Evolution Machining & Fabrication front-end components (including high-steer kit)
Owner says: “What originally started as swapping the front fenders out turned into much, much more. I couldn’t exactly go online and buy a kingpin Dana 60 swap kit, so everything had to be fabricated in my garage. That wasn’t nearly as hard as it could have been, thanks to the aid of a plasma table. It took about 6 months to get it all finished. I’ve replaced far more things than I should have. Ultimately, I built the truck to be fun, overbuilt, and as a test to show off my skills. There are all sorts of little additions that can’t be seen. I documented what I could on my Instagram account.”

Owner says: “I have always been a Dodge person, but when I drove one of these LMLs, I had to have one. Of course, it had to be a Denali package. I have only had the truck for a year, so the list of modifications I will be doing goes on and on.”

Continuing Upgrades
Year/Make/Model: ’04 GMC 2500HD
Owner: Eli Lawson
Hometown: Nitro, West Virginia
Engine: 6.6L Duramax V-8
Transmission: Allison 1000 five-speed automatic
Odometer: 175,000 miles
Fuel Economy: 17 to 20 mpg

Owner says: “I bought this truck three years ago, and the injectors went out after a couple of months of owning it. Since then, I have been slowly adding things (bodywork and TLC). I pull my fifth-wheel camper and tractor with the truck, and it does an amazing job. The diesel bug has bit me hard. The only problem is money; I just don’t have enough of it to do what I really want to do. It’s been a big learning curve, but I’ve enjoyed every bit of it.”
