I love the Duramax LB7’s sound and fuel economy. For me, it’s better than a new truck at a fraction of the cost. Future plans include adding an intercooler, a BorgWarner S366 turbocharger, traction bars, head gaskets, ARP cylinder-head studs, and a built transmission.”

Owner’s wife Kitina says: “My husband has always wanted a new Chevy truck but really could not ever find the one we wanted in our price range. As the kids got older, it was harder for all of us to ride in a single cab. One day, he came up with the idea that he would just build the truck he wanted. So he stretched the frame and added the crew cab with a 454 big-block and a five-speed transmission, but he couldn’t get any mileage out of it. So it was decided to go with a 12-valve Cummins. Now, it can pull anything we need, everyone can fit, and it gets great fuel mileage. Out of the 20 years he has owned the truck, it has been this way for about 3 years. It rides great and we love it.”

Work In Progress

Year/Make/Model: ’14 Ram 1500
Owner: Michael Gault
Hometown: Nantucket, Massachusetts

Transmission: ZF eight-speed automatic
Odometer: 40,000 miles
Fuel Economy: 16 mpg city/25 mpg highway
Modifications: Green Diesel Engineering hot tune and transmission tune, two-wheel-drive low-range switch
Owner says: “These Ram trucks are amazing. I have not had one issue with the truck, with the exception of experiencing a high number of DPF regenerations due to the short distance between my workplace, the lumberyard, and home. The truck has a perfect-size engine. It heats up twice as fast as my old 24-valve Cummins. This engine should be in a lot more vehicles. It’s not that wild, but the engine is pushing first-generation Duramax numbers and digs into the torque when hooked to an 8,000-pound trailer. It is just an amazing truck for medium-sized loads. And the air suspension is fun to play with.”
