Modified ’94 Dodge Ram 2500 Gets It Done With Mechanical Fueling

Andrew Morrison has been working on trucks for as long as he can remember. Age 27 now, he has owned more than 100 diesel-powered rigs over the past 11 years. At age 21, Andrew started working at Cummins Inc. and was there until the beginning of 2018, when he got a text from McCoy Black (Diesel Power Challenge 2017 alum) asking how he liked his job. One thing led to another, and before Andrew knew it, he had quit the corporate job and started working for McCoy at MB Diesel Performance.
Andrew has only owned his ’94 Dodge Ram 2500 since September 2017, when he and his wife drove 25 hours round-trip from North Carolina to Michigan to get it. The truck already had a few modifications, but the most recent upgrades were 13 years old. Knowing he wanted to try to get into Diesel Power Challenge 2018 Presented by XDP, Andrew started making changes right away, so he would be able to test the truck on the dragstrip well before the event.
Starting from scratch due to how outdated the previous mods were, Andrew pulled the engine, transmission, and everything else down to the brake lines. The truck’s 5.9L Cummins engine originally had a triple-turbocharger setup, but he decided to go with a smaller set of compound turbos for better spooling in Denver’s high altitude. All of the changes were made with Andrew dreaming of getting into DPC.

“I am so grateful to be one of the 11 chosen for DPC,” Andrew says. “There were a lot of great trucks to pick from, and I am just blessed that people still have faith in an old, mechanical 12-valve.”
He also feels very lucky to have McCoy on his team supplying knowledge and experience.
“There’s a good field of competition, but I am confident about most of the events,” Andrew says. “I know the trailer cone course may be a challenge due to my truck being a regular-cab, longbed with a 12-valve Cummins. My entire setup is designed and built around getting into DPC, so I am excited to see how the truck will perform.”
Andrew says he may not have made it without people who supported and helped him out on his build, so he thanks Firepunk Diesel, Diesel Performance Converters, EvilFab Diesel, All Shades Custom, Rudy’s Performance Parts, and Industrial Injection.

Photo 4/25   |   The compound-boosting process for the 5.9L Cummins 12-valve engine starts with a BorgWarner S480 turbocharger pressurizing air into an S369 SX-E turbo. The charged air then passes through an On3Performance air-to-air intercooler for temperature reduction before proceeding to a Keating Machine side-draft intake manifold. Two 45mm Turbosmart external wastegates keep the abundance of boost in check.

Photo 8/25   |   The two 240-gph FASS Fuel Systems lift pumps receive diesel from a bed-mounted fuel cell and pump it forward to Industrial Injection’s 13mm P-pump and 5x22 injectors. The lowered suspension uses custom adjustable shocks and Calvert Racing CalTracs traction bars to keep the rear tires planted to the ground.
