Want + Need = One Bad Super Duty

Garrett Osen, who was selected as an alternate for Diesel Power Challenge 2018 Presented by XDP, says the stunning black ’10 Ford F-350 he has owned since 2013 was born of desire and a small amount of necessity. “I had been wanting a diesel for a few years but couldn’t pull the trigger until I wrecked my gasser while driving home from work in North Dakota,” Garrett says. “I just bought the first one I found that I could afford at the time.”
A thoroughly destroyed 5R110 five-speed automatic transmission led Garrett to seek assistance from Justin Summers of Auto Trends Motorsports in Fort Collins, Colorado (it’s also where he met and formed a friendship with DPC 2015 alum JD Gleason).
Photo 2/19   |   Of all the Ford pickups invited to Diesel Power Challenge 2018 Presented by XDP, the clean jet-black ’10 F-350 belonging to our alternate, Garrett Osen, is the only rig that can legitimately lay claim to having the best-looking factory-installed front bumper (in our opinion, the ’08-to-’10 Super Duty piece is the sharpest one). American Force “Buckshot” wheels also complement the otherwise-simple truck.

“Since meeting those two, I haven't stopped messing with the truck,” Garrett says. “We put a transmission in it, and then a drop-in turbocharger and custom tunes, and proceeded to crack a piston. Of course, a plan for a mild reliable rebuild evolved into what the truck has become now, with an engine and transmission built by Nathannial DeLong. For my money, he’s one of the best builder/fabricators in the game.”
Garrett confesses the time leading up to getting the call from KJ Jones was an emotional roller coaster.
“Of course, I was hopeful, but not really expecting it. I'm not particularly well known, and I keep a pretty small circle,” he says. “It turns out, getting the call was pretty exciting and made finishing the rest of my yard work a lot more bearable.”
Photo 4/19   |   The event’s lone 6.4L Power Stroke engine is boosted by compound turbochargers (66 mm and 82 mm) prepared by Elite Diesel Engineering and managed with ECM tuning by Gearhead Automotive.
In addition to JD, Garrett has met and become friends with several other former Diesel Power Challenge competitors; not coincidentally, the majority of them are Ford guys. “I'm actually really pumped about the prospect of competing in Diesel Power Challenge. It’s the standard the truck was built to meet. I’m pretty confident my truck will be highly competitive and will finish the competition, because I've got a great team who helped make the truck possible.”
Photo 5/19   |   A truck’s “cool” is not always defined by its blatantly obvious modifications and accessories. A close look at the rear axle on Garrett’s rig uncovers the unique aluminum hubs by Innovative Machining Solutions and lightweight rotors of Wilwood’s Super Duty disc-brake system.
Photo 6/19   |   Inside the nearly stock cabin, Garrett glances left to see engine vitals presented by a windshield-mounted Edge Products CTS2 monitor and reaches just below it to change ECM calibrations with the H&S Performance Mini Maxx programmer.
Photo 7/19   |   Garrett’s F-250 rides smoothly on an even plane thanks to a 2.5 Series leveling kit by Icon Vehicle Dynamics featuring piggyback-reservoir front shocks and internal-reservoir rear dampers.
