Diesel Power Challenge 2018 Competitor Kody Pulliam – #DPC2018

Well-Rounded Performance—In Theory, at Least

With seven years of diesel enthusiasm and experience as an oil-burner mechanic, Kody Pulliam might as well have unrefined crude flowing through his veins. Based in Ammon, Idaho, Kody has owned his ’04 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD for about two years, putting on a fair amount of the truck’s 300,000-plus miles.
In that time, the truck has transformed into a solid all-arounder, Kody says. Its capability starts, predictably, under the hood, where a Baird Racing Engine and Chassis 6.6L Duramax V-8 resides, built in nearby Idaho Falls. The mill is augmented with a Screamin’ Diesel Performance compound-turbo kit, with a BorgWarner S488 SX-E turbocharger feeding an S369 pressure ’charger.
Sitting just behind the engine is a No Zone Diesel Allison automatic transmission that was custom-built for the ’04 Chevy, routing power through stock axles and putting it down effectively thanks to SDP traction bars. Kody says the suspension is close to stock, though Bilstein dampers do their best to keep the Silverado under control.

Kody is entering Diesel Power Challenge 2018 Presented by XDP with confidence bolstered by his experience as a diesel mechanic and familiarity with his truck. “I feel good,” he says. “Really excited and ready to go compete with everyone. I’m here to have a good time.”
Since being accepted as a DPC competitor, he’s given the truck a bit of a once-over—adding bigger cylinder heads and a new camshaft—and he’s been driving the truck for a few weeks to get it settled and sorted on his daily drive.
“I’ve always wanted to compete,” Kody says. “We’ve had a few trucks from our shop compete in DPC, and we thought, Why not try it with mine?
He’s most confident about the dyno, but Kody also thinks his truck (and his driving skills) is good enough to not just finish the event but to potentially place on the podium. “I just know I have a good all-around truck to compete in the events.”

Photo 4/19   |   The interior of the ’04 Chevy retains a mostly stock appearance, but anyone who understands diesel motorsports will instantly notice the supplementary gauges and monitors mounted on the A-pillar.

Photo 7/19   |   What kind of power will Kody’s truck put down once he hits the nitrous-oxide button? We can’t wait to find out.
Photo 8/19   |   On an all-black truck like Kody’s, a little hit of turbocharged acid goes a long way.
