Classy meets Trashy

In the summer of 2009, Krystal Brewer and her boyfriend Justin decided to accompany some friends to a truck show. One show turned into eight shows that year, and the inseparable couple instantly fell in love with the truck scene. “Our friends just had us tag along to keep them company,” Krystal tells Truckin, “but we ended up loving everything about the culture.” Although Justin had gone through many different hobbies, they both seemed to gravitate toward the truck lifestyle.
It took Krystal eight years to finally get her first truck, but the story is quite romantic. While browsing online sales ads, Justin came across a ’69 Datsun 521 in Kansas and made some inquiries. He arranged the sale with the owner before Krystal even laid her eyes on the classic. The next morning, Justin woke Krystal up and showed her the ad—and Krystal absolutely fell in love with the Datsun. She didn’t think it would still be for sale, but at that point Justin couldn’t hold back his grin, and he told her it was purchased and on the way to their home in South Carolina.

“I literally stayed up until 2 a.m. when the transport arrived,” Krystal adds. “I felt like a little kid on Christmas.” Once she took position, Krystal couldn’t wait until she could make her mark on the Datsun. The classic truck was already ’bagged but needed some major adjustments. The camber had to be modified as well as the toe and angle of the shocks due to the rims getting caught in the fender while airing up. Justin and his friend Slim handled that work while an eager Krystal looked on.

The custom three-link with upper wishbone was manufactured while the Datsun was ’bagged on bar with Firestone bags. The shocks were mounted on the notch bridgework, and a shortened Toyota rear axle with Moser axles was installed by Chris Pollock and Shawn Thatcher at Thatcher. While the motor, transmission, and wire harness are being prepared to fit inside the smaller engine bay of the Datsun, it will have to be torn down again for the blasting, smoothing, and powdercoating.

Krystal and her husband Justin went from spectators to participants within 10 years, and now their two daughters, Ari and Teagen, get to enjoy the truck culture from the very beginning. Krystal wishes to thank their good friends Slim and Shannon as well as Brian and Brad Baird for all their help and support. As a member of Aftermath, she plans to showcase her completed Datsun (named Victoria) alongside her Aftermath family throughout the next show season.
