2021 Trucks With V-8 Engines

Which new V-8-powered pickup is the best?

Oct 28, 2020
It's a bit sad, but the state of the automotive industry in 2021 is leaning more toward highly efficient small-displacement engines instead of the burly V-8s of old. Thankfully, these beasts of burden haven't been fully forgotten, and you can still get a great V-8 engine with decent fuel economy and loads of torque from nearly all pickup manufacturers. Let's take a look at the V-8 engines available for the 2021 model year.

2021 Chevrolet Silverado & GMC Sierra

While there are many differences between Chevrolet's Silverado and GMC's Sierra pickups, the drivetrains are shared between the Silverado and Sierra cousins. For 2021 GM offers the choice of either a 5.3L or 6.2L V-8 engine for 1500 models, and the option of a 6.6L gasoline or 6.6L diesel V-8 for its 2500HD and 3500HD pickups.
The 5.3L V-8 engine is available in all trims of Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. To get the 6.2L V-8 customers will need to option RST, Trail Boss, LTZ, or High Country trims. GMC buyers will need to order an AT4 or Denali to access the big V-8.
For the HD trucks, either the 6.6L gasoline or 6.6L Duramax diesel engine are available in all configurations and trim levels. The 6.6L gasoline V-8 is the standard engine, and the 6.6L Duramax diesel adds more than $10,000 for the option.

2021 Ford F-Series

Ford has been one of the leaders of engine downsizing since the company first introduced the 3.5L EcoBoost V-6 for F-150 pickups in 2011. Thankfully, for 2021 the company is continuing with the 5.0L V-8 engine for F-150 and has even upped the horsepower and added automatic stop/start technology. Ford offers the 5.0L as an option for all trim levels of F-150.

In its Super Duty lineup of heavy-duty trucks Ford offers the choice of three different V-8 engines. Base is a 6.2L gasoline V-8, followed by a new 7.3L big-block gasoline V-8, and finally a 6.7L Power Stroke diesel V-8. Pretty much every configuration of F-Series Super Duty can be had with any of the three available V-8 engines. Tremor is only available with the 7.3L or 6.7L V-8s, while Limited and F-450 models are only available with the Power Stroke diesel V-8.

2021 Ram Trucks

For the 2021 model year Ram offers a trio of Hemi V-8 options. Ram 1500 models are offered with the 5.7L Hemi V-8 engine, while Ram 2500 and 3500 models come standard with a 6.4L Hemi V-8. The 5.7L V-8 engine is standard on Limited model 1500s and optional across the rest of the lineup. Along with the standard 5.7L Hemi V-8, Ram also offers a mild-hybrid version of the engine fitted with the company's eTorque system.

Ram Heavy Duty trucks come standard with a 6.4L Hemi V-8. Now, before you get too excited, this engine is almost entirely different than the 6.4L Hemi found in SRT model vehicles. Bumping up to a Cummins diesel, albeit an inline six-cylinder, will set you back between $9,300 and $12,000.
Finally, new for 2021 is the supercharged 6.2L (don't call it a Hellcat) V-8 found in the impressive Ram 1500 TRX. This engine churns out 702 horsepower, but good luck getting your hands on one as the first year of production appears to be sold out.

2021 Nissan Titan & Titan XD

For 2021 Nissan is able to grab the claim of most standard V-8 horsepower because, well, the company only offers one engine in its Titan and Titan XD pickups. Nissan's 5.6L Endurance V-8 makes great power and for 2021 is backed by a new 9-speed automatic transmission. Naturally, then, the V-8 is available in all configurations of Titan and Titan XD.

2021 Toyota Tundra

Oldest among the current offering of pickups is Toyota's Tundra. The truck has aged quite well, still has strong sales, and has an even stronger enthusiast following. Toyota also offers a single engine for Tundra, the 5.6L iForce V-8. The engine has remained unchanged for quite some time, leading to its fantastic reliability. Unlike the newer trucks, Toyota still backs the 5.6L V-8 with a six-speed transmission. We expect a new Tundra from Toyota in the near future, so enjoy this V-8 engine while you still can.
