I have a 96 Express Van, 5.7, with a relatively new rebuilt trans/torque converter.  Under load at 65 mph plus the transmission slips badly until 3rd kicks in or I let up off the gas. As long as I ease the throttle is seems to hold, but too much load invokes the downshift, as I call it from locked up 4th to 4th. if I hold down the break and accelerate it does not slip, at least not the few times I have been able to attempt the procedure.  I think I have a torque converter going bad, my mechanic (by phone) thinks that may be the case or 4 gear bands are bad. All the other gears seem to work well.
