Hello Alex, my first time posting here.  Regarding the 92 Chevy V8: dirty fuel (esp. Water) and a dirty air cleaner would be my first checks after replacing plugs, cap.  Your advice about checking RPM at idle shorting a cylinder at a time is also a goodie!  Plug wires too if they are old.

But next, I would be concerned about the EGR valve functioning properly, because of the comment he made about vehicle speed.  Most important is fuel though, once you've determined that the spark is all there. A truck that old has had many years to accumulate crud in the fuel tank, so clean fuel is a key factor to eliminate early in the process.

An easy way to do it is to squirt a little starting fluid (ether) into the air cleaner at idle.  If the engine speed increases, you have a clear sign of a lean condition.  If the idle is rough and the ether makes it smooth out, you have found your culprit.  Hooking up a vacuum gauge makes this process easier but it's not a necessity, esp. if you have a tach.

My 94 Cheyenne (2500 3/4 ton, long bed ext cab 4x4) with the 454 TBI has 263k miles. Still runs and pulls hard, tranning is messing up (bad speed senor) but all in all a good buy for 500.

I'm wanting to build a street truck out of it. Possibly even something I can take to the strip on weekends. I'm planning on building a performance engine out of a tbi 5.7 or getting a ZZ4 350 crate to drop into it.

Definitely go for the 350 crate motor!  The TBI 5.7 is a great motor for a work truck but not so much for a high performance engine.  If you are going to the trouble of doing R&R in the engine compartment, get the crate!
