Best Diesel Deals on Craigslist: Kansas City

The town that’s known for great blues and barbecue, also has cool oil burners for sale.

Oct 30, 2020
The "Best Diesel Deals on Craigslist" series began in March 2020 with a story about a 1994 Ford E-350 that served in former President Bill Clinton's motor pool. With this rundown on Kansas City, Missouri, we now have 15 stories covering our search for diesels being privately sold via Craigslist from coast to coast.
It's important to note that diesel-powered pickup trucks, while plentiful almost everywhere, are not the primary target of our searches. In an effort to have some fun with this project, we're looking for uncommon, unique, or even quirky diesel vehicles, equipment, parts, etc. However, there certainly are instances where the late-model pickups we're all familiar with receive their just desserts.
The search for privately sold diesels in the Kansas City, Missouri (not Kansas), area resulted in a paltry 99 rigs, most of them being white Fords of varying years. Here are the five trucks we think are worth considering.
As always, we want to know details if you follow up on one of these examples. Be sure to let us know about cool diesel deals that you come across on Craigslist, too. Send info and a link to: dieselpower@motortrend.com.

Want a work truck? For the money ($3,900) and despite having a few cosmetic flaws inside (torn seat, air conditioning issue) and out (dents, rust, paint), we think this really is a pretty good rig to consider. Why? Because it's powered by a 7.3L Power Stroke engine, has a rebuilt automatic transmission, and gets 17 to 20 miles per gallon. A worker doesn't have to be pretty. This truck has four new tires, two fresh batteries, a balancer and belt tensioner, and a ladder rack that the seller is throwing in as part of the deal. "Even if it's a little beat up, it's still an excellent driving 7.3L diesel truck. Try finding one cheaper," the seller says. If you're in or around Harrisburg

It's a highly coveted squarebody K-10, and we dig the uniqueness of its 6.2L diesel engine, turbo 400 automatic transmission, and four-wheel drive powertrain. The seller in St. Joseph wants $4,500 or best offer, and the way we score it, swap the flatbed with a shortbed, and you'll be good to go.

We've been down this chassis road in our diesel searches for other cities, to make the message clear that a good deal isn't always about selling an entire truck. This rolling chassis has a 5.9L Cummins and a rebuilt transmission/transfer case, as well as a Dana rearend. So, for $3,000 or best offer, it's something worth moving on for anyone with build aspirations.

This one is for the enterprisers, as Kansas City sees plenty of snow during the winter months. Why not buy a salt-spreader setup for $19,000 and make the investment-and-more back when the flakes start to fly? The 88,000-mile rig has a Caterpillar diesel engine, and the rebuilt transmission and replacement torque converter have 10,000 miles. A lot of recent upgrades like tires, a 50-gallon fuel tank, and stainless steel brake lines really make this package pretty solid for business-minded shoppers.

If you have been following our BDDOC series intently but haven't figured out by now that we have a soft spot for decommissioned military rigs, you're simply not paying attention. The six-wheel-drive trucks highlighted in other cities differ from this one because they're not tractors—the ultimate big-rigs. This 5-ton behemoth is motivated by a 14.0L Cummins NHC250 engine that is backed by an Allison five-speed automatic transmission. With only 6,000 miles since it was refurbished by the U.S. government in 2013, there's a lot of life left in this one. Yours for the really decent price of $7,000!
