Best Diesel Deals on Craigslist: Lincoln
Very limited quantity, but good trucks all around in Cornhusker Country.
The "Best Diesel Deals on Craigslist" series began in March 2020 with a story about a 1994 Ford E-350 that served in former President Bill Clinton's motor pool. With this rundown on Lincoln, Nebraska, we now have 17 stories covering our search for diesels being privately sold via Craigslist from coast to coast.
It's important to note that diesel-powered pickup trucks, while plentiful almost everywhere, are not the primary target of our searches. In an effort to have some fun with this project, we're looking for uncommon, unique, or even quirky diesel vehicles, equipment, parts, etc. However, there certainly are instances where the late-model pickups we're all familiar with receive their just desserts.
Our search in Lincoln was, in a word, dismal. Only 16 offerings appeared when we called for privately sold diesels in Nebraska's capital city. Now, of course it's possible that more oil burners are sold through dealers, but, we're also thinking the Lincoln area may be one where owners simply hold onto their rigs for a long, long time.
Despite the minimalistic hodgepodge of trucks, cars and buses, everything appears to be of decent quality and realistically priced. Nothing quirky or far out in Lincoln (with the exception of the party bus that has a great backstory), which makes it a very good place to score a solid rig for work and/or play. As always, we want to know details if you follow up on one of these examples. Be sure to let us know about good diesel deals that you come across on Craigslist, too. If you want diesel, don't necessarily need a pickup, prefer a car over an SUV, but not a sedan, this is the best option going. The Jetta Sportwagen is special to Diesel Power because in 2015, Editor KJ Jones was "this close" to having one to evaluate for a full year. The Volkswagen emissions scandal broke literally within days of KJ's order being placed, nixing the long-term loan. For those who don't know, pound-for-pound, Sportwagens are super-reliable rigs that fall right in the sweet spot of being more than a sedan and just a bit less than an SUV, and their six-speed DSG transmission (a dual-clutch manual-automatic gearbox that can sequentially shift out of one gear straight into the next with one fluid motion) make them a whale of fun to drive. Another huge plus is that the I-4 turbodiesel in this ride gets 40-plus miles per gallon in fuel economy. This Eagle-based Jetta's clean appearance, 51,000 miles and very reasonable $7,495 price make it a car that's worth looking into.
We like this one because its recently (2018) installed 7.3L Power Stroke diesel engine apparently has only 2,000 miles, it's four-wheel drive, and has a six-speed manual transmission. Sargent is the location, and $25,000 is the listed price that we think should be negotiated down, if possible.
Plain and simple, this is just a really nice rig! The seller welcomes interested buyers to check out the Carfax report, and verify claims that it has only had one owner and never been in an accident. It's well-equipped with a 6.7L Cummins turbodiesel, automatic transmission, back up camera, power locks, power windows, power mirrors, cruise control, keyless entry, factory remote start and the ad says "much more." This one is for sale at $18,900.
Talk about a rig that's "in good shape for its age." With 162,000 miles on the odometer, this good looker's 6.6L Duramax has never been tuned and recently received new injectors on the passenger side. We like the truck's upgrades: A 91-gallon auxiliary fuel tank, 4-inch exhaust, leveled three inches and 20-inch wheels, and think that a solid offer within range of the seller's asking $20,000, should be enough to make this one yours.
This party bus was selected purely for the sake of its history, as its former use somewhat parallels the story of the van that started our Best Diesel Deals on Craigslist series. The converted one-ton rig was once owned by a Nebraska congressman and used as his mobile command center (like President Clinton's communications rig). Highlights on this 7.3L-powered party machine are new batteries, 20-, and 42-inch televisions, a custom bar, seating, storage, carpet and more. A colorful vinyl wrap and your $5,100 is all this van needs to be totally ready to party.
