Best Used Trucks Under $10,000

Don’t drive a hooptie!

Apr 14, 2020
So you need a new truck but don't want to go into debt for the next eight years by spending money that you don't have to impress people you've never met. And you've made the decision that you need a reliable ride for less than $10,000. Dave Ramsey would be proud. (Of course you're paying cash for this used truck, right?) Thankfully, there are literally tens of thousands of good, reliable, fun trucks for sale right now for just that amount, or less!
Let's take a look at the best offerings for used mid-size, half-ton, and HD trucks from all of the brands. As a bonus, if you stick around until the end, we'll let you know which budget 4x4 truck we think is the best bang for your hard-earned buck.

Used Midsize Trucks Under $10,000

The midsize truck segment is where we find the widest selection of good used trucks for less than $10,000. Not surprisingly, this is because they had a lower starting price to begin with. Expect to find a good selection of four-cylinder and six-cylinder trucks, two-wheel-drive and four-wheel drive, along with cab sizes. Mileage of 100,000 or more is common, but expect to be able to find trucks with as low as 50,000 if you're willing to drive a little.

2006 to 2012 Ford Ranger

The Ford Ranger went largely unchanged from 2001 until its sunsetting in 2012, aside from a few cosmetic changes. Because of this, parts are still readily available, and there are millions of trucks in circulation. Finding a clean, relatively low-mile truck is easy to do for less than $10,000.
Photo 3/16   |   002 Best Used Trucks Under 10k Chevy Colorado

2005 to 2012 Chevy Colorado

Chevy's Colorado was the company's first venture in the midsize space after putting the S-10 to pasture in 2004. They were available in three cab configurations: standard, extended, and crew. The truck's I-5 engine wasn't as well received as it should have been, and because of this many, premium crew-cab options are available. A 5.3L V-8 was available, but good luck finding one under $10k.
Photo 4/16   |   003 Best Used Trucks Under 10k Dodge Dakota

2004 to 2011 Dodge Dakota

The Dodge Dakota is another often overlooked midsize pickup, largely because they have been out of production for nearly a decade now. However, they are a great choice for someone on a budget, as they can be had with a V-8 engine and fewer than 100,000 miles for under $10,000. As a bonus, the Dakota offered a manual transmission until the end.
Photo 5/16   |   005 Best Used Trucks Under 10k Nissan Frontier

2004 to 2018 Nissan Frontier

The Nissan Frontier is the longest-running midsize nameplate without a refresh. Fortunately, a new Frontier is coming in 2021. What this means, however, is great parts availability for used trucks. In addition, the Nissan Frontier is the newest pickup you can buy used for less than $10,000, with 2017 and 2018 models frequently available at this price point.
Photo 6/16   |   006 Best Used Trucks Under 10k Honda Ridgeline

2006 to 2014 Honda Ridgeline

The Honda Ridgeline is the truck for people who don't really want a truck. They have crossoverlike ride and handling, carlike fuel economy, and Honda reliability. The Ridgeline is unibody and doesn't have an available low-range transfer case, so its appeal was limited among traditional truck buyers. And because of its reliability, it'll be hard to find one with less than 150,000 miles for under $10k.
Photo 7/16   |   007 Best Used Trucks Under 10k Toyota Tacoma

2005 to 2012 Toyota Tacoma

We're all aware of how well Toyota trucks hold their value. Because of this, finding a Tacoma for less than $10,000 is quite the challenge. They are out there, but you'll be getting a single-cab, two-wheel-drive, high-mileage, or any combination thereof. If you really want a Tacoma, we suggest saving some more cash and bumping your budget a touch.

Used Half-Ton Trucks Under $10,000

Good used half-ton trucks are actually quite easy to find for less than $10,000. There many different brands to choose from, and as the most popular pickup segment, there are millions of trucks sold each year. Engines are typically a V-8, but some base V-6 trucks can be found. Depending on how hard you look, all three common cab configurations are available, as are two- and four-wheel-drive models, for less than $10k.
Photo 8/16   |   008 Best Used Trucks Under 10k Ford F150

2004 to 2014 Ford F-150

There are more Ford F-150 pickups in this year range available for under $10,000 than probably any other truck. And it's no surprise because the Ford F-150 has been the best-selling vehicle in the U.S. for more than three decades. If you're willing to travel and don't care about mileage, you can pretty much find whatever configuration of F-150 you want.
Photo 9/16   |   009 Best Used Trucks Under 10k Ram 1500

2002 to 2008 Dodge Ram

One of the best things going for this generation of Dodge Ram (that's right, the Ram brand didn't break off from Dodge until 2009) is the 390-hp 5.7L Hemi V-8 engine. And you can readily find 2008 trucks with fewer than 100,000 miles, a crew-cab, four-wheel drive, and a V-8 engine for less than $10k.
Photo 10/16   |   010 Best Used Trucks Under 10k Chevy Silverado 1500

2005 to 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Behind only the F-150, Chevy's Silverado 1500 pickup is the second most popular truck in America. Because of this, options for good used trucks are plentiful. The company's 5.3L V-8 engine is common, and it's not difficult to find crew-cab four-wheel drive models on the cheap.
Photo 11/16   |   011 Best Used Trucks Under 10k Toyota Tundra

2007 to 2014 Toyota Tundra

Much like the Tacoma, Toyota's Tundra pickup holds its value quite well. And because sales volume was much lower than the Big 3, it's harder to find a low-mileage example on the cheap. For $10,000 you're looking at a 200,000-mile Double Cab with two-wheel drive.
Photo 12/16   |   012 Best Used Trucks Under 10k Nissan Titan

2004 to 2014 Nissan Titan

Much like the Frontier, Nissan's Titan is one of the unsung heros of the half-ton class. With a powerful 5.6L Endurance V-8 and industry-first tech such as a factory spray-in bedliner, Utilitrack bed rail system, and innovative bedside in-bed storage. Finding crew-cab V-8 trucks with about 100,000 miles is fairly easy, despite having the lowest sales volume of all half-tons.

Used HD Trucks Under $10,000

We're not going to sugarcoat this one. Finding an HD truck for under $10,000 is going to be challenging. It's highly unlikely you'll be able to find one powered by a diesel engine, and the bulk of offerings will be high-mileage fleet trucks. Even still, there are deals to be had if you're willing to hunt one down.
Photo 13/16   |   013 Best Used Trucks Under 10k Ford F250 Super Duty

Ford F-Series Super Duty

There are actually a fair bit of Ford F-250 and F-350 Super Duty pickups available under $10,000. We've found as new as 2015 if you're looking for a single-cab, two-wheel-drive XL work truck with a gasoline V-8 engine. And we've found a fair amount of 6.0L and 6.4L Power Stroke diesel trucks, four-wheel drive and crew-cab, but with high mileage. If the mileage or the 6.0Ls reputation don't scare you, then there are good deals to be had.
Photo 14/16   |   014 Best Used Trucks Under 10k Chevy Silverado 2500

GM 2500HD & 3500HD

From the GM camp there are plenty of Silverado and Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD pickups to be had for under $10k. However, the vast majority are powered by the company's 6.0L gasoline V-8 and are two-wheel drive, far more so than the available Fords. Duramax diesel-powered trucks are available at this price point, but expect them to have 300,000 miles on the odometer or be in need of costly repair. We see some trucks as new as 2015 available, but the bulk are going to be 2001 to 2007 models.
Photo 15/16   |   015 Best Used Trucks Under 10k Dodge Ram 3500

Ram 2500 & 3500

Dodge and Ram (the Ram brand split from Dodge in 2009) 2500 and 3500 pickups are an especially good buy for those looking for an HD truck on the cheap. Gasoline V-8s make up the bulk, but there's a good variety of cab styles and even some four-wheel drives at this price point. Cummins diesel-powered trucks are rare but can be found. For a Cummins expect it to be an older model with 250,000 miles or more. It's also worth noting, Ram didn't have a true crew-cab until the 2010 model year.

Used 4x4 Trucks Under $10,000

Finding a used four-wheel drive truck for less than $10,000 is totally doable. There might need to be some concessions, like size, mileage, or engine choice. However, if four-wheel drive is your deal-breaker. it can be found.
Photo 16/16   |   016 Best Used Trucks Under 10k Nissan Frontier Pro4x
Looking at all of the available options, if we were to declare a best bang-for-the buck off-roader under $10k, it would be the Nissan Frontier Pro4X. The Frontier Pro4X comes loaded with off-road goodies such as skidplates, an electronic rear locking differential, good shocks, and decent tires. It's also available with a manual transmission and stout 4.0L V-6 engine.
Second choice would be an F-150 FX4. Options exist for trucks with either a crew-cab or extended-cab, and either a 5.4L V-8 engine or 3.5L EcoBoost V-6. At about 150,000 miles these trucks will come in under $10,000.
