For the better part of a decade, the light truck segment seemed to be taken for granted by customers and manufacturers, with little innovation to speak of. Fast-forward to today, and it's a whole different ballgame. The segment is packed with new and upcoming entries in multiple segments, with state-of-the-art powertrain and chassis technology.

We can't remember the last time the pickup segment was this competitive and innovative. Ram introduced the eight-speed transmission across its lineup in 2013, only to follow up with the 1/2-ton segment's only diesel in more than 20 years. For the 2015 model year, Ford is introducing its revolutionary aluminum-bodied F-150, and General Motors is fielding a fresh pair of contenders in the midsize market with the all-new Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon. After a decade-long wait, we're finally going to see the next-generation Nissan Titan, complete with a Cummins diesel V-8 option.

If that's not enough excitement for you, get ready for comprehensively refreshed 2015 HD models from GM, and a major update on the 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel on the 2015 Super Duty.

In vans, we have a ground-up redesign of the compact Ford Transit Connect, soon to be followed by its big brother, the full-size 2015 Transit coming later this year. The recently introduced Ram ProMaster also gets a junior sibling with the introduction of the 2015 ProMaster City.

You can read all about these exciting new entries in our 2014-2015 Truck and Van Buyer's Guide below!

2014 Nissan NV200

Base Price: $21,100-$30,560

Body Type: Compact Commercial Van

UNCHANGED: New for the 2013 model year, Nissan takes a page out of Ford’s Transit Connect playbook by tackling the small commercial segment with this front-drive, four-cylinder cargo carrier. Designed with small business owners (including taxicab drivers) in mind, the NV offers gobs of utility (124 cu ft of cargo volume) and greater efficiency than larger vans. NV200 taxis have just dropped their flags in New York after a series of delays.

MINOR: After receiving a new base engine and class-exclusive 8A for 2013, the hits keep coming for the Ram 1500 for 2014, with wider availability of the eight-speed automatic on the 5.7L Hemi V-8. But the biggest news is the debut of the 3.0L EcoDiesel V-6 shared with the Grand Cherokee. Producing 240 hp and a stout 420 lb-ft of torque, the class-exclusive option promises to offer a compelling combination of capability and economy.

Look For: Class-leading fuel economy with diesel engine.

Sum Up: Ram gives half-ton customers the power of choice.

2014 Ram Cargo Van

Base Price: $22,355

Body Type: Compact Commercial Van

UNCHANGED: The Ram C/V is essentially a gutted, panel-sided Dodge Grand Caravan. It’s the brand’s placeholder offering until a version of the Fiat Doblo, rumored to carry the ProMaster City moniker, makes its way stateside. Expect the ProMaster City to debut sometime in calendar-year 2014 as a 2015 model. To help move the 2014 C/V off lots, Ram cut the price by $1105 to $22,355 compared with the 2013 model.

Look For: Ram C/V’s Doblo-based replacement in about a year.

Sum Up: Ram’s lame-duck small cargo van.

2014 Ram HD

Base Price: $30,695-$67,175

Body Type: Full-size

UNCHANGED: Following last year’s torque bump of up to 850 lb-ft on the 6.7-liter Cummins, enabling a colossal 30,000-lb maximum towing capacity, Ram 2500 models get a coil and optional air spring rear suspension, and a 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 option for $1495. The 2014 Power Wagon model promises to be one of the best ever, with the axle articulation afforded by the four-wheel coils, and the optional bigger Hemi.

Cool Fact: The Ram HD still offers the 6.7L diesel with a six-speed manual.

2014 Ram ProMaster

Base Price: $29,625-$37,145

Body Type: Full-size Commercial Van

ALL-NEW: The Ram ProMaster replaces the Mercedes-engineered Sprinter that once wore Dodge badges. With a unique-for-the-segment front-drive configuration, the ProMaster design gives the van a lower load floor than the Sprinter or the 2014 Ford Transit. A 280-hp 3.6L V-6 is the base engine, with an available 174-hp 3.0L I-4 turbodiesel with 295 lb-ft of torque. No factory passenger-van configuration is planned for now.

Look For: Configurations for just about every business need.

2014 Toyota Tundra

Base Price: $26,915-$48,315

Body Type: Full-size

MAJOR: The next-gen Tundra uses carryover engines, but there have been plenty of improvements. The truck has received a somewhat conservative restyle and a new trim level. In addition to SR, SR5, Limited, and Platinum, there’s the new Western-themed 1794 to compete with the Ram Laramie Longhorn, Silverado High Country, and F-150 King Ranch.

Cool Fact: The 1794 Edition was named in honor of the JLC cattle ranch, founded in 1794 where the Tundra plant is located.
