1-Ton Reg Cab Long-Bed 4WD
Our Pick: Dodge Ram 3500
With the complete redesign of the 2500/3500 HD Ram lineup, Dodge has wisely added a few different models to its lineup, including a single rear-wheel 1-ton four-door option. Ford is the only maker of a single-rear-wheel and dual-rear-wheel model 1-ton. We like that the Ram standard engine is the powerful Hemi V-8, with the 8.0-liter V-10 option only an additional $600. That's a great value. Combine that with the in-cab hidden compartments and clever storage slots behind the front seats, and we think this vehicle would make anyone happy if it was their work office for the week.

Compact Reg Cab 2WD Pickup
Our Pick: Toyota Tacoma
As an entry purchase into the pickup segment, there's plenty of value here in just about any configuration; however, we like Toyota's powerful four-cylinder engine, as well as the inexpensive PreRunner option ($1900) that gives a much stronger, more aggressive look, yet is still the least-expensive two-wheel-drive truck of the group. Combine that value with Toyota truck's build-quality history, and the Tacoma is tough to beat. The Ford Ranger is another vehicle we think provides good value, and, from what we've seen, we have high hopes for next year's new compact pickups from GM.

Four-Door 4WD Pickup
Our Pick: Dodge Ram
This segment has expanded in recent years and may grow even more in years to come. Companies like Ford, Toyota, and Honda are considering adding their versions to the segment, but failures like the dearly departed Lincoln Blackwood will keep everyone cautious. We like the Dodge Ram 1500 because of the variety of bed lengths and engine choices. We also like the 4.7-liter V-8 as a base engine, but would recommend the new 5.7-liter Hemi for anyone planning on hauling a load or looking to light up the rear tires. And, at a $795 option, we think it also makes a great value. We furthermore like the 1500HD and Avalanche options, but couldn't quite justify the almost $35K entry fee (and that's before the $4495 Quadrasteer option).
