Overall Winner: Land Rover LR3
Although it's about the best off- and on-road sport/utility we've seen in quite a few years, this is not a vehicle without flaws. Many won't like the squared-off, boxy shape and the vehicle's significant weight, but most of that disappears when a driver dips into the powerful V-8 and seamlessly runs up and down the six-speed transmission. The interior layout provides a good amount of cargo volume for its size, with the second- and third-row seats folding astonishingly flat. And, yes, it's the best four-wheel-drive system we've driven.
Under $35K Winner: Jeep Grand Cherokee
The all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee starts around $27,000 and offers three distinct engine options. Although not any bigger than the earlier version, Jeep made the interior feel more spacious while vastly improving the quality of materials, surrounding textures, and interior noise. By stiffening the Jeep's unibody, towing capacity has increased by more than 500 pounds. And the Hemi option is only $1245.
Over $35K Winner: Lexus GX 470
A long-time favorite for many of us at Truck Trend, the Lexus is pricey, but there's plenty of technology and value under the skin. Based off the 4Runner platform, the GX 470 offers high-grade leather with rich wood accents throughout the dash and console. Gauges feature the clearest and cleanest layouts around, and the X-REAS crosslink system makes for smoother pavement carving and impressive suspension-flexing off-road capability.
