With Andre Berto's sudden withdrawal from the Jan. 30 welterweight unification fight against WBA Welterweight Champ "Sugar" Shane Mosley, due to the earthquake in Haiti, the buzz now has turned to a much bigger fight for Mosley -- a possible matchup against Floyd Mayweather Jr.
The fight would be a first for the two, who've never fought each other. Mosley is undoubtedly a fearless opponent, going back to his amateur days and later during his first big fight against Oscar De La Hoya, beating the "Golden Boy" for the WBC Welterweight championship.
On the phone from his training camp in Big Bear, California, a rather soft-spoken Mosley explains that he's always been driven, even as a kid. "I was doing a lot of things at a very young age, I started boxing at eight and then I won the state championships and regionals at the age of 10 and 11."
His innate competitive streak translated to other areas of his life. Born in Lynwood, California, Mosley grew up in Pomona, right off the 10 freeway. Fueled by sibling rivalry, he wanted to learn how to drive his parents' old Volkswagen Beetle when he was just 10 years old.
"I learned how to drive in a stick shift Beetle. It was my parents' car but then it was given to me. That was my first car. I was driving pretty early," he chuckles. "I had older sisters, so because they got their cars and they were driving, I had to learn how to drive. I was one of those kids that was very competitive and if somebody else could do it, then I could do it too."
Mosley's dad taught him how to drive by taking him to empty parking lots on weekends. "We'd drive around the parking lot and usually when my father would drive, he let me shift the gears," he says. "That's how I learned -- throw to first, press the clutch, throw to second, then press the gas again, press the clutch." The lime green Beetle later became Mosley's high school car.
