On an early Portland morning, Art Alexakis, the force behind rock band Everclear, calls from a 2006 BMW Z4 on the way to rehearsal. Rock and roll is in his blood, and since he was born and raised in Los Angeles, cars are likely part of his DNA.
That day the rocker was ripping through West Hills, the area he wrote about in his hit "I Will Buy You a New Life." The next time we dished about cars, he swapped the Z4 for his current daily driver, a 2009 Infiniti FX35, which he rates a 9.
"I really, really like it, it's a great car," he says of the crossover. "We had a lot of snow for Portland and we live up on the hill and had three feet of snow. It's an all-wheel drive car and without traction devices or studded tires, it did pretty well. Where everybody else was stuck, I was moving around."
Alexakis also made use of Infiniti's adaptive shift control. "I use that when I need to go into low gear and it's pretty responsive, it feels very comfortable and I grew up driving a manual," he says. "I'm getting ready to teach my daughter how to drive and I wish I had a manual transmission car. I might buy something for a couple grand, like an all-wheel Toyota truck and teach her how to drive, because if she can drive that, she can drive anything."
Before the FX35, he had his eye on the BMW X6, but the mileage wasn't as good. "Plus it only fits four and I'm glad we didn't buy it because we need that fifth seat big time."
