Truck Trend's Best In Class 2010: Compact SUV, AWD/4WD

From the March, 2010 issue of Truck Trend
By The Editors of Truck Trend
 |

Winner: Toyota FJ Cruiser
Runner-Up: Ford Escape

2009 Toyota Fj Cruiser Front Three Quarters View
Vehicles in this category are expected to do everything: carry gear, go off-road, tow a small trailer or a boat, and provide a comfortable ride during the week. It's no easy task, but the Toyota FJ Cruiser achieves much of what a compact SUV should. It can tow 5000 pounds, provides plenty of power, good fuel economy, and seating for five, and in regular form is great off-road--and that capability gets even better with the Trail Teams edition. However, there are rumors it will be going away in the near future, and its cool design means there are blind spots.

2010 Ford Escape Front Rolling View
Looking for a more traditional option? The Ford Escape gives you a choice of three powertrains (with up to 240 horsepower), 3500 pounds of towing capacity, comfortable seating for five, and some capability off the beaten path. As long as you aren't tackling the Rubicon Trail, the Escape (and Mazda Tribute/Mercury Mariner sibs) is an excellent all-around vehicle.

It would have made more sense to pick the Escape for several reasons.....more people buy it, Ford still makes it and it might not kill you.

The Truck Trend 2010-2011 Compact SUV Buyers Guide gives only 2 vehicles 5 Stars (Drive before you Die), and the FJ Cruiser isn't one of them. The 5 Star Nissan Xterra is a better vehicle. So, how does the seriously rear seat access and sight-line compromised FJ Cruiser come out ahead? This 'Winner' choice makes no sense, and makes Truck Trend look like it can't count its own stars.

P.S.
The Audi Q5 is included... with a 110.5 inch wheel base, as is the Jeep Liberty with a 106.1 inch wheel base. So, the 106 inch cut-off has not been adhered to by the Truck Trend editors... and the best vehicle has been left of the list.
