Rutledge Wood has been having a great ride lately. It was a short road from being a karaoke night host to landing at SPEED in 2005 on "NASCAR Live," and later hosting "Road Tour Challenge."
Wood just wrapped up the first season of the U.S. version of "Top Gear," getting one of the most coveted TV gigs in the automotive world. He hosts along with rally racer Tanner Foust and comedian Adam Ferrara.
Wood called from a downtown Atlanta Trader Joe's, where he was running an errand in his daily driver, the 2008 Toyota Tundra CrewMax.
"It's a great truck; it's plenty big enough," he says. "We have two kids, so I definitely have to have something that holds the whole family. He specifically bought Hankook DynoPro ATM tires, one of Foust's sponsors, to support his co-host.
Rutledge used to rate the truck a 10, but that's changed now that he has his eyes on the new Ford Raptor. The Tundra now gets an 8. "The Raptor is just the most insane truck I've ever seen," he says. "I really want one. I have to talk my wife into it, though. There's never been a truck from the factory that's been really good off-road."
1970 Datsun 521 pickup truck
Wood loves old-school Japanese cars that are inexpensive enough to buy outright without car payments. He loves this Datsun. "It's perfect for what it is. I love fun old stuff. I like cars that have character, and it definitely was one of those. It's a four-speed little 1600cc motor, so it's not real fast. I'd say it tops out at 64 or 65. You can go faster but it sounds like it's going to blow up. I haven't pushed it much faster."
