Truck Trend's Best In Class 2011: Crew Cab Pickup, 2WD

From the June, 2011 issue of Truck Trend
By The Editors of Truck Trend
 |

Winner: Ford F-150 SuperCrew
Runner-Up: Toyota Tundra CrewMax

It seems everything qualifies for this category, from compacts to heavy-duty models, and even one that's based on an SUV platform. We restricted this award to half-tons and smaller. This is the segment of the market most light-duty truck buyers are going to consider, and having space in the cabin is just as important as having a decent-size truck bed and towing capacity. To level the playing field, we followed the same rules as we do with our Truck of the Year event: We compare each candidate with the rest of its competitive set to see which does the best job. The Ford F-150 SuperCrew is still the champ. It was our pick last year, even with engines in dire need of an upgrade, which they got for this year. The base V-6 is a decent work-truck engine; the 5.0-liter V-8 is great for daily driving and towing; the 6.2 has good ol' fashioned horsepower; and the fantastic EcoBoost provides V-8 power and V-6 fuel economy.

For some reason, the Tundra with the large V8 wasn't listed.  Ford has done well with its truck line, offering the widest variety of engines.  Their powertrain warranty, however, is weak compared to GM and Chrysler, and the Ram's much more advanced suspension system puts it in a class by itself for comfort.  One would suspect that Motor Trend (and its sister Truck Trend) would pick the Ford, though.  One might think because Ford's trucks are the best sellers, some would put them as the best...maybe that is the most important reason.  Camaro outsells Mustang, too, so maybe the consumers are right.

The Tundra with the V-8 is on the second page

Hey. I'm new to the site. I am currently in the market for my first pickup truck ! Unfortunately i keep going back and forth between what i want, ford? chevrolet? GMC? Toyota? There are so many options. I am hoping that "Truck Trend" can help me out with this. I'm in the market for either a used 2004-up f-150 supercrew 4x4, 2007-up Chevrolet Silverado 1500 crew cab 4x4, 2007-up Gmc Sierra 1500 crew cab 4x4, or 2007-up Toyota tundra double cab 4x4. I'm a general contractor and the thing that i'm looking for most in a truck is versatility. With towing, ride quality, comfort, etc. Any opinions/ help on this would be greatly appreciated, because as of now, i don't know where to start. Thanks Truck Trend !

Here are some 2011 facts:
Brakes: Ford has dual piston 15" vented discs in the front and dual piston 13" vented in the back. better than all the others
Torque: Ford has a greater torque ft/lbs at the lowest RPM of all others.
Cab: 3 layers of formed sheetmetal with corner gussets. All others have 2 without gussets.
Quietiness: Just go drive all of them.
MPG: The Ecoboost has the best MPG's out of all trucks.
Frame: The ford frame has a higher tensel strength of all 1/2 tons.
Payload: The bed, which has the highest payload, has a stronger engineered bed design, not to mention the tailgate is made the same way.
Radio: Ford radios suck
Hub Carriers: Ford has the largest
Engine Mounts: Ford has the largest most dampening.
Leaf Springs: Ford has the largest, yet the ride is harsh.
Cost: 2011 crewcab ecoboost FX4 XLT with a side step and tail step is $42,000 before negotiations and discounts. More than all except the Dodge Ram.

Tundra (number 2) on next comment.

Tundra cont'd:
Brakes: dual piston 13" vented discs in front and 10" single piston discs nonvented in back.
Torque: Nice torque but higher in the RPM band to reach max pulling power--worse on hills.
Cab: wider than all other trucks, not enough gusseting and can hear squeaks throughout the years.
Quitiness: ok
MPG: caca
Frame: superbly weak in the rear. No welded crossmembers and major components attached by rivets.
Payload: 4th place
Radio: ok
Hub Carriers: same as a Small SUV or large car.
Engine Mounts: typical of a 4 cylinder
Leaf Springs: 2.5 inch
Cost: $39,000
SUM IT UP: If this truck had a supercharger on it to increase the usable torque, a larger brake upgrade, larger supsension, frame modifications, and added gusseting in the cab, it would win hands down...alas, it would be > $55,000 subsequently.

Dodge Ram
Brakes: 2nd in size (no need to upgrade
Torque: Very nice, great pulling ability--Dodge should turbocharge their 3.7 V6 and exceed the Ford.
Cab: Needs more leg room in the back, but still nice. 2 layers of sheet metal with a 3rd in highstrenght requirement areas--no gusseting.
Quietness: ha. . .nice exhaust notes heard!
MPG: 20
Frame: strong enough
Payload: Ram went to coilover springs in the back and has a hard time staying "straight" when loaded.
Radio: awesome
Hub Carriers: uh, did Dodge bring a car or a truck to this comparison?
Engine Mounts: ok
Leaf Springs: N/A
Cost: $46,000 --highest in test.
SUM IT UP: Nicest looking truck, great sound, puny payload driving. Nice towing capability

jasonjudd4  (11/15/11 11:54 AM)

GM (chevy/GMC):
Brakes: single piston 13" vented in front, drums in back
Torque: needs more lower in the RPM range--slow when pulling.
Cab: deadly
Quietness: when new, great, but held together with plastic pop rivets on the interior although nice exhaust note.
MPG: 21....to bad you have to mash the pedal to get anywhere and this number exceeds the actual.
Frame: 2nd strongest in comparison
Payload: 2nd best
Radio: extremely awesome
Hub Carriers: ok
Engine Mounts: ok
Leaf Springs: 2.5"
Cost: the most negotiated truck--work them
SUM IT UP: not as good as GM's past trucks. When the front fenders are disconnected, there is no integrity up front.

jasonjudd4  (11/15/11 12:00 PM)

Titan:
Brakes: 13" dual piston vented front, 11" single piston unvented rear
Torque: any titan owner will tell you it hurts in this level of towing
Cab: comfy!! Needs more legroom in the back.
Quietness: loud exhaust note but cab is ok
MPG: worse than any
Frame: almost there, tiny rearend
Payload: nicely constructed bed. almost there.
Radio: great
Hub Carriers: Nissan failed here, they do the job, but if you hit a curb on accident, they will bend.
Engine Mounts: lots of vibrations.
Leaf Springs: 2.4"
Cost: today, these are inexpensive.
SUM IT UP: the weakest link of all trucks today. I suspect with Nissan though, they are sitting out for a bit to redesign something incredible..we shall see.

jasonjudd4  (11/15/11 12:04 PM)

I hope this helps. I used to enjoy GM and nissan, however, with the new Ford, I just couldn't resist it's superiorness. It has a higher cost, but the value of this truck compaired to the others far exceed the price. Go drive them all. Then take note of the facts I stated here and make your decision. They are all great trucks, however, like a stripper, nice to look at but kinda messed up on the inside.  )  Jason
