2014 Infiniti QX50

Base Price: $35,395-$36,795

Body Type: Luxury Compact

UNCHANGED: The 2014 QX50 stays the same as when it was called the EX, and engine displacement badges are added to the front fenders. The QX50’s 3.7L puts out 325 hp, only 65 less than the 5.0L V-8 found in the QX70. That QX50’s power, coupled with its relatively light weight, make it second in QX performance only to the QX70, and almost tops in the mpg department.

Look For: An entry-level Infiniti possibly called the QX30, based on the Mercedes GLA.

Sum Up: A powerful, compact luxury wagon alternative.

2014 Infiniti QX60

Base Price: $42,545-$47,000*

Body Type: Luxury Full-size

MINOR: The vehicle formerly known as the JX goes mostly unchanged except for a name change to QX60 and a new hybrid version. Using a supercharged 2.5-liter I-4 with a CVT and a lithium-ion battery, the QX60 Hybrid produces a combined 250 hp and 243 lb-ft of torque. Available with FWD and AWD, the hybrid will carry a premium of about $3000 above V-6 models and get an estimated 26 mpg combined.

Cool Fact: The QX60 will be Infiniti’s first hybrid SUV.

Sum Up: Now with supercharged hybrid.

2014 Infiniti QX70

Base Price: $45,945-$62,495

Body Type: Luxury Midsize

UNCHANGED: There are no changes to the QX70 other than the name change from FX. The V-6 is offered with rear- and all-wheel drive while the V-8 has standard all-wheel drive. Expect a mid-cycle refresh in the next year or two. It would be nice to see Infiniti add the QX80’s more torque-rich 5.6L engine to the QX70. Infiniti did “hire” Sebastian Vettel to help with vehicle development, so a hot-rod QX70 might not be that farfetched.

Driver's Choice: The 390-hp V-8 model is Infiniti's quickest SUV.

Sum Up: Still special as an FX or QX70.

2014 Infiniti QX80

Base Price: $62,345-$65,445

Body Type: Luxury Full-size

UNCHANGED: Like the rest of Infiniti’s SUV line, the QX80 gets no new changes or updates, other than the rebadging from QX56. The beast from the East is the largest SUV Infiniti has to offer, but don’t let the size fool you. The QX80 is equally happy on- or off-road. This massive SUV can carve up a canyon road better than you might think.

Cool Fact: In other countries you can get the QX80 as a Nissan with a manual.

Sum Up: Amazingly competent Escalade alternative.

2014 Jeep Cherokee

Base Price: $23,990-$30,990

Body Type: Midsize

ALL-NEW: The all-new Cherokee replaces the Liberty with a more powerful, efficient, and capable model. Three 4WD systems are available, two with low range and one with a locking rear differential on Trailhawk models. New engines and a nine-speed automatic promise better fuel economy. The design goal of the Cherokee was to make it look contemporary in 2019.

Cool Fact: At 56.0:1, the Cherokee’s crawl ratio bests the Grand Cherokee’s and non-Rubicon Wranglers’.

Sum Up: Ready to prove itself worthy of the name Cherokee.

2014 Jeep Compass

Base Price: $19,490-$28,685

MINOR: The lightly face-lifted Compass now offers a six-speed automatic for people who don’t want a CVT. Also finally available are standard side airbags for the front row, and an optional rearview camera. Inside, the Limited now offers Saddle Brown perforated leather seats with accent stitching. Compass armrests and center console lids are now wrapped in vinyl, and the instrument cluster gets an upgraded look.

Avoid: 2.0L engine is painfully slow. Upgraded engine is only $485.

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Base Price: $29,790-$64,190

Body Type: Midsize

MAJOR: Major updates for 2014 include a new eight-speed automatic for the entire range and a new diesel V-6, both of which improve fuel economy. Exterior styling is updated and the new interior features a digital instrument cluster and an 8.4-inch touch-screen infotainment system. A new Summit model extends the Jeep’s reach even further into luxury SUV territory.

Best Buy: The diesel engine gives you V-8 towing power with better-than-V-6 fuel economy.

2014 Jeep Patriot

Base Price: $16,990-$26,990

Body Type: Compact

UNCHANGED: The Patriot finally gets with the times , gaining an optional six-speed automatic for those who don’t want a CVT, and standard side airbags for front seat occupants. It’s otherwise the same vehicle it’s been for years, offering 2.0- and 2.4-liter four-cylinder engines as well as a choice between front- and all-wheel drive. Expect a Fiat-based replacement to offer higher fuel economy with Jeep styling and a seven-bar front grille.

Best Buy: A Cherokee if you’re considering a high-end Patriot.

Sum Up: The cheapest way to get a Trail Rating, but not the best.

The Freedom Edition returns for 2014 based on the Sport S model, and Jeep will donate $250 to the USO for every Freedom Edition sold. More than 80 percent of all components have been revised, including an updated exterior with LED lighting, a revised interior with a digitized instrument cluster, electric power steering, and a chassis that’s been tweaked for improved comfort. A 3.3L V-6 finds its way into all trim levels, while the 2.4L inline-four can only be had in LX spec.

MINOR: The Kia Sportage compact crossover debuted for the 2011 model year and we expect the cute-ute to be refreshed for 2014. Along with subtly revised sheetmetal and a front grille that better matches the front design of the Forte and Cadenza, the volume-oriented 2.4L I-4 adds direct-injection tech.
