Maserati Levante

Base Price: $80,000*

Body Type: Luxury Midsize

ALL-NEW: The Levante, formerly known as the Kubang (concept pictured), is Maserati’s entry into luxury SUVs. Sharing its basic platform with the Jeep Grand Cherokee (which itself is related to the Mercedes-Benz ML), the Levante parts ways from its U.S. cousin by being built in Italy and using a twin-turbocharged V-6 or V-8. With the redesigned Quattroporte and new Ghibli sedans, Maserati may soon have a much greater presence in the U.S.

Look For: What could be a legitimate Cayenne competitor.

Base Price: $30,780-$37,420

Body Type: Full-size

UNCHANGED: The CX-9 got a makeover for 2013, with a front-end restyle reflecting the brand’s new Kodo design language. Mechanically, the CX-9 remains relatively unchanged. The winner of our 2008 SUV of the Year award, the CX-9 remains one of our favorite large crossovers. Its 3.7L V-6, however, is lagging rivals in fuel efficiency, and its successor could be four-cylinder powered.

2014 Mitsubishi Outlander

Base Price: $23,820-$28,620

Body Type: Midsize

ALL-NEW: This seven-passenger SUV is all-new. Most notable is the sleeker, 200-pound-lighter body that’s 7 percent more aerodynamic. Jump in the SE and GT trims to find more upscale materials. An ECO mode reduces power and A/C air flow to save fuel on the I-4 and V-6. SE and GT trims can be had with a lightweight AWD system (the base ES is FWD). Step up to the higher two trims to get foglights, dual-zone A/C, power tailgate, and leather.

Look For: The GT’s next-gen nav with 3-D mapping.

Both trims get a new engine balancer shaft, steering wheel audio controls, and additional sound deadening. They also have new stereo head units, though the SE’s is a bit snazzier with a 6.1-inch touch screen with a rearview camera and HD Radio.

Best Buy: Opt for the SE Touring Pack for 3-D navigation.
