2014 Porsche Cayenne

Base Price: $50,575-$146,975

Body Type: Luxury Midsize

MINOR: Save for the inclusion of a 550-hp Turbo S, little new comes to the Cayenne line, which was recently refreshed. The newest S adds more athleticism to the already cunning seven-model range, with retuned air suspension, dynamics control system, torque vectoring, and a low 4-second 0-60-mph sprint. Pick any version to get a long list of standard features including Bluetooth connectivity, 7-inch touch screen, and a power tailgate. Read about the 2014 Cayenne Platinum Edition HERE.

Look For: The torquey diesel to get 29 mpg, easy.

Sum Up: The go-anywhere 911.

2015 Porsche Macan

Base Price: $50,895-$73,295

Body Type: Luxury Compact

ALL-NEW: Based on VAG’s/Audi’s Q5 platform, the Macan is small, stylish, and, of course, very luxurious. Positioned below its well-known big brother Cayenne, the Macan promises to be equally athletic, featuring all-wheel drive. With the Cayenne the best-selling Porsche so far in 2013, expect the Macan to help Porsche reach another record sales year in calendar-year 2014. At first, the Macan will launch in S and Turbo trims.

Look For: A less expensive model to debut, under the S.

Sum Up: The Cayenne for urbanites.

2014 Subaru Forester

Base Price: $22,820-$28,820

Body Type: Midsize

ALL-NEW: In its fourth generation, the crossover/SUV hasn’t grown substantially on the outside, but has more usable space inside. A 6M is available only on the base model, but the new CVT works well and even offers a manual mode. Body strengthening and insulation work create a smooth, quiet ride on the highway. Decent fuel economy, real off-road ability, and trim levels to suit a large range of buyers make this the best Forester yet.

Driver’s Choice: Forester 2.0XT with 250 turbocharged horses.

Sum Up: Take the family on a weekend rally.

2014 Subaru Outback

Base Price: $24,320-$32,920

Body Type: Midsize

UNCHANGED: The Outback Premium gets the All-Weather Package (including heated front seats, side mirrors, and windshield wiper de-icers) as standard equipment. The Premium also adds the display audio system with a 4.3-inch display and six speakers. The Outback 3.6R Premium has been discontinued, though the hot Outback lives on as the higher-trim 3.6R Limited.

Cool Fact: Optional EyeSight tech will auto-magically brake the car if a collision is imminent.

Sum Up: Outback remains up front in its class.

2014 Subaru Tribeca

Base Price: $34,920

Body Type: Midsize

UNCHANGED: We predicted in last year’s guide the Tribeca would be in its final year. If we keep saying that, we’ll eventually be right. For 2014, the moonroof becomes standard on all Tribecas. A new harman/kardon audio system is now available on Limited trim-level cars equipped with the rear-seat entertainment system. The Tribeca comes with a standard third-row seat.

Best Buy: There’s only one trim level, so if not this Tribeca, an Outback.

2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek

Base Price: $22,820-$30,120

Body Type: Compact

MINOR: The Crosstrek was new for 2013, so the big news for 2014 is the addition of Subaru’s first hybrid powertrain. The electric motor adds 13 hp and a more impressive 48 lb-ft of torque. On top of that, it will return an extra 3 mpg around town, while a stiffer suspension and a quicker steering ratio make for a hybrid that's sportier than the standard version. Hybrid models will be well-equipped, so expect a high price of entry.

Driver’s Choice: The 2.0i Premium with a manual transmission.

Sum Up: A turbo away from greatness.
