Ford Raptor Towing Capacity by Generation

Hauling more than just ass!

Feb 10, 2021
It's no secret that Ford's F-150 Raptor's power lies in its desert racing inspired suspension and not in its towing ability. That's not to say that the Raptor isn't a competent tow rig, rather that Ford has been required by the standards to which they test towing ability to rate the Raptor lower than its F-150 brethren because of the truck's soft suspension, taller ride height, and large tires. With that said, let's take a look at the F-150 Raptor's towing capacity by generation.

First Generation: 2010 to 2014 Ford F-150 Raptor Towing and Payload

Ford initially launched the F-150 Raptor in 2009 as a 2010 model. The first trucks were in SuperCab configuration only and came fitted with a 5.4L V-8 engine. Late in the first model year a 6.2L V-8 became an option. In 2011 Ford added the SuperCrew model and dumped the 5.4L V-8, making the 6.2L standard. Towing remained the same through the generation, with SuperCab models rated at 6,000 pounds and SuperCrew trucks at 8,000 pounds. However, payload increased slightly for SuperCrew models mid-generation.

Second Generation: 2017 to 2020 Ford F-150 Raptor Towing and Payload

After a two-year hiatus, Ford returned the F-150 Raptor to the lineup of all-new F-150s. This new generation had more wheel travel, larger Fox shocks, and a more powerful 3.5L EcoBoost V-6 engine. What remained the same, however, was the truck's tow rating. SuperCab models were rated to tow 6,000 pounds while SuperCrew models got a bump to 8,000 pounds. Curb weight decreased from the first generation, thanks in part to a new military-grade aluminum body, allowing payload to increase.

Third Generation: 2021 Ford F-150 Raptor Towing and Payload

With the announcement of Ford's third-generation F-150 Raptor pickup came an increase in maximum towing and payload for the off-road warrior. Maximum towing gained 200 pounds, jumping to 8,200. Payload saw an increase over the 2020 F-150 Raptor, as well, bumping up to 1,400 pounds. Gone now is the SuperCab version of the Raptor. As of this writing, no other towing specs have been announced for the 2021 F-150 Raptor.
