Everything old is new again, as long-lived arcade companies resurrectclassic coin-op games for the consoles, treating aging Gen-Xers to thefound memories of misspent youth, and quarters. The latest suchcollection is thankfully all automotive, with Midway giving new life toeight standalone titles: Badlands, Hydro Thunder, Off Road Thunder: Mud,Sweat and Gears, Race Drivin, San Francisco Rush the Rock, San FranciscoRush 2049, S.T.U.N. Runner, and Super Off Road Race. Sadly, no SpyHunter. On a full-size monitor, these games look as dated as theirmid-80s to mid-90s copyright dates would suggest, yet the nostalgiceffect is immediate. We were relieved to see that we could still readilywin on our favorite titles, bringing back good memories and laughs. While hard to compete against the amazing games hitting shelves thisyear, Arcade Treasures 3 is a value title, launching at $20 when it goeson sale late September for GameCube, PS2, and Xbox. We hope to see thisported to handheld devices where the smaller screens would mask thechunk graphics, and the short game play would feel more appropriate.Good fun for the money.
