Nissan Rogue Side
Nissan is recalling 163,659 Rogues over a possible steering gear assembly defect that may result in a loss of vehicle control. The recall affects Rogues produced from March 7, 2007 to July 20, 2009 using a steering gear assembly supplied by NSK. Vehicles manufactured after July 20, 2009 are not affected because they use a different steering gear housing cover.

As described by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, "A screw in the steering gear housing cover may loosen over time and could fall out. As it loosens, the steering response of the vehicle may be compromised but the driver will retain steering control." If the driver makes "large inputs with the cover screw missing, the pinion shaft may come out of the steering gear, resulting in a complete loss of steering control."

To repair, Nissan dealers will inspect the screw and retighten to proper levels if needed. Dealers will install a cover plate to prevent the screw from falling out. The NHTSA expects the recall to occur in November 2009, but current Rogue owners can contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.
