The New (Temporary) Face of Silverado
You may have seen hints of it in the road test of the rear-drive Silverado SS (TT, July/August), but there are minor changes in the entire Silverado line for 2006. All light-duty models receive a new front-end design with a "power-dome" hood. In addition, there's a VortecMAX performance package offered for 4WD 2500s, which includes a 345-horse, 6.0-liter V-8. New packaging means there'll be an extended-cab shortbox offered, with the 5.3-liter V-8 and LT trim. These changes are in addition to the horsepower boost in the Duramax and new automatic trans ("News," September/October).

Drive by Joystick
AEVIT has come up with the X-Wire drive-by-wire system. There are no mechanical links between the driver and the vehicle's control surfaces, all inputs are operated by electronics. This means someone could modify his vehicle to be controlled entirely by joystick. Could this technology come to production vehicles?

2007 Chevrolet Silverado
GM's full-size pickup trucks are getting a complete redesign for the 2007 model year. Here is the latest photo of GM's high-seller, as a pair of the trucks undergo high-temperature testing in the Southwest. The Silverado's base engine is changing: For 2007, it will be the 3.5-liter inline-five. The other engines offered will be 5.3- and 6.0-liter V-8s with Displacement on Demand, both backed by a six-speed automatic transmission. Expect the 1500 in late 2006, with the 2500 and 3500 coming in early 2007.

2007/2008 Toyota Tundra
Also caught while undergoing hot-weather tests was the next-generation Toyota Tundra Double Cab. The front and rear doors are much larger than the current model's, super-sized to compete with the likes of the Dodge Mega Cab. Even though this prototype is heavily camouflaged, it is still evident that the Toyota pickup's design is rugged and athletic, seeming to take after its little brother, the Tacoma, and hinting at the FTX concept shown last year. The new regular- and extended-cab Tundras will probably go on sale in 2007, with the Double Cab coming soon after.
