Saab 9-X BioHybrid coming to New York show

March 13, 2008

By Andrew Strieber

Want to see the Saab 9-X BioHybrid in person? The concept that recently premiered in Geneva is set to make its North American debut at the New York International Auto Show on March 19th. As we outlined earlier at Geneva, the 9-X Biohybrid is inspired by the Aero X concept of 2007 and previews Saab's upcoming 9-1 sport compact based on the same Opel platform underpinning the Saturn Astra.

Aimed at the youth market, the 9-X concept features a sleek, "shooting brake" hatchback profile and is filled with the latest and greatest tech, including a 3-D digital instrument panel and wireless data, multimedia, and navigation system designed by Sony Ericsson. Under the hood Saab continues the environmentally friendly theme it introduced in the 9-4X CUV with a 1.4L turbo hooked up to a hybrid system good for 200hp, and the engine also runs on GM's favorite green fuel, E85. Unlike its previous offering, 9-2X, which landed with a thud, if the 9-X Biohybrid is any indicator Saab's latest hot hatch should provide a compelling alternative to Volvo's C30 and Audi's A3.

Whether Saab brings the car stateside remains to be seen, as right now production is only slated for Europe. Maybe a stellar reaction from U.S. enthusiasts will influence their decision. For more info on this year's NYC Auto Show be sure to keep checking TT Online for complete coverage up to and during the show press days, March 19-20.
